When Suzanne Roberts and Debbie Lea founded Airport Media in 2002 they set out to take on the big boys who had dominated airport advertising for many years.
The company now holds the sole and exclusive rights for displays, promotions and experiential marketing campaigns across ACSA's airports enabling them to raise the bar in communications at South Africa's International and regional airports. To handle this business they have launched their new division, Airport Activation with its own staff and identity.
One of the first companies to take advantage of this new experiential opportunity is Cell C. They have linked up with Hummer and Samsung to blast off a promotion at OR Tambo airport as part of a campaign to grow Cell C's market share and brand awareness. No fewer than six Hummer's will be given away to those who sign new contracts or upgrade existing contracts. Other generous prizes include Samsung cell phones, television sets and sound systems.
Airports are becoming less dependent on revenue streams from traditional aeronautical sources and relying more on profits from advertising, retail, restaurants and parking. The recent 2007 results of ACSA show that commercial and non-aeronautical revenues increased by 20,7% to R1,2 billion and now comprise 46% of total annual revenue.
In preparation for 2010, Roberts says that longstanding clients are already booking their advertising space and there will be those who want to come in at the last minute for a short term tactical advantage. This will certainly apply to those who choose new and exciting experiential promotional opportunities.
