Two Idols winners: fair or fiasco?

11 May 2009 10:5425 commentsBizLike
Both Sasha-Lee Davids and Jason Hartman were declared joint Idols winners in a press conference on Friday, 8 May 2009 by M-Net and FremantleMedia, the format owners of Idols. This is proving to be a controversial “world first”, a result of technical glitches having occurred in the public SMS voting. [poll]
Said Patricia Scholtemeyer, CEO of M-Net, "M-Net's Idols Season V was an unprecedented success and the public participation throughout the season was phenomenal. For the first time, the voting public had 100% say in the outcome of the competition to decide the winner. Therefore, every vote counted and it was imperative that the votes were counted accurately.

"When M-Net realised that not all the SMS votes cast before the cut-off time at 6.05pm had been received and accounted for, we immediately began corrective action to understand fully the true situation. Following the recount, it turned out that there were 1.3 million votes for Jason and 1.1 million votes for Sasha-Lee, which is evidence of the immense public following that both our Idols winners have garnered during the course of the competition."

SMS votes

The final week's voting period ran from Monday 27 April at 7.30pm until Sunday 3 May at 6:05pm during the final live show. When the votes had been verified after the cut-off time on Sunday evening, Davids was the winner. However, when the regular post-show internal analysis was conducted the following morning, it became apparent that an unusual amount of SMS votes that had been sent in before the 6.05pm cut-off time, had not been received and thus included in this result.

M-Net management took action and called in KPMG to independently conduct a recount and verify the actual results. As a result of this process, it has emerged that Hartman did in fact receive more votes than Davids. Various media reports have it that M-Net has blamed the cellphone operators for the glitch, which they in turn have denied.

Unexpected scenario

"This competition is driven by the public's vote. While we acknowledge that this was not a scenario that we had expected or wanted, we are delighted with the outcome as both Jason and Sasha Lee are true Idols. We will be following their careers closely and with great interest," concluded Scholtemeyer.

According to New24.com, sponsors have agreed to double up on winners' prizes and the Idols judges are in disagreement over what is fair.

Surely KMPG must take responsibilty?-
As the so called audit supervisors, how is that they are not being criticised for this fiasco? Their credibilty must be zero as a result.

I guess Davids would have sued MNet if the decision had been reversed. The 'Joint winners' is the only comprimise that MNet and the owners of Idols could arrive at that wasn't going to turn ugly. But Jason has been fleeced and deserves better. Time will tell who makes the most out the opportunity that this win affords. I will lay good money on who maximises it. Posted on 11 May 2009 11:35
It's not fair to Jason-
but if he's happy I'm happy for him! Posted on 11 May 2009 11:41
Reply to KPMG being responsible-
As far as I know, KPMG did not conduct the original finals audit. I think PWC did as they were involved with the counting process throughout the entire show.

In any case, if the smses hadn't actually been received by the cut off time those votes wouldn't have been counted. Posted on 15 May 2009 16:16
Cellphone “cartel” the only winner-
Guess what - another countrywide network meltdown - dropped calls and poor connectivity. The sole interest is to extract money from consumers and not handle tiresome "problems". Posted on 11 May 2009 13:45

This annoys me...-
I'm one of those people who prefers 'the local version' over all others and who blindly defends them when they turn out to be comparatively mediocre (to wit: Survivor, Big Brother, The Apprentice, etc).

But this really annoys me.

Are we - and in fairness, our service providers - so completely useless that technology lets us down and we have to be the first bloody country on earth to announce joint winners of everything? Again, let me reference The Apprentice here.

Shape up, SA and start getting it right so that we can compete fairly with everyone else... Posted on 11 May 2009 14:46

Maybe an inadvertent stroke of genius?-
If you were looking for a way to get the whole country aware of and talking about Idols - even people who traditionally didn't give a fig about it - this was a classic. Maybe not orchestrated, but the same outcome.

They'd be nuts to dump the show now. People will watch the next time even if only to see what else might go 'wrong'! Posted on 11 May 2009 15:22

Good point Clive-

Huh? Can-
In the link http://www.news24.com/News24/Entertainment/Local/0,,2-1225-1242_2513443,00.html KPMG says that 600k votes weren't reckoned in, of which ONLY 200k belonged to Jason? More plus more equals more than less plus less, methinks. Posted on 11 May 2009 22:12
SA cellphone network can't handle load-
Welcome to Africa....home of the first double idol winners. Just a proof that our technology lags far behind and this country is headed downhill Posted on 12 May 2009 00:45
Downhill?-
Sad that you think that we're going downhill. Why can't we just be a little be more positive. Positivity brings positivity and I agree we may not be first world booming, but we certainly got a lot going for us. Out of interest have you ever been abroad? It's not always sunshine and roses... Publicity Stunt 101-
SA’s largest means of communication is through cell phones, therefore the interest from international companies such as Virgin. Rural areas that have little or no electricity, never mind landlines, usually boasts with half the neighborhood owning cell phones. It is weird thinking that there are people without these “luxuries”(?).

However, if you take in account that 20 million people have registered for the 2009 elections, then you can imagine how infant our technology would have been if they all had “voted” via sms…

How many of you actually tried to send out a sms or make that ridiculous phone call on New Years Eve / 1st hour of the New Year? It is highly frustrating if not impossible to get signal… I for one, received celebration messages a week later from my yellow friend… Not to say that my red friend served me any better, but the matador might be forgiven seeing as it shares with those blue…

I think that M-Net handled it quite well and that the publicity they received should smooth out any frowns. The question is: what did the official sponsors get out of this double performance?

To say KPMG is responsible for the “mistaken” votes is unfair, seeing as it due to a delay in sms’s received. However, as Jo stated, News24 has reported that KPMG’s audit revealed 600k votes were unaccounted for, and that only 200k belonged to Jason… what to make of this is up to you, but I for one would like to scrutinize that report!

Congratulations to Idols and the winners, Publicity Stunt 101 has been aced! Posted on 12 May 2009 08:34

One Winner!-
I really think that Jason should win fair and square and should have the title of Idols Winner 2009, but I do understand that it would not be nice to take the prizes away from Sasha-Lee. I do feel that Jason should get something extra, something sweeter to add to his clear cut 200 000 votes extra win. He was truely the better singer throughout the contest and the votes just go to show. Posted on 12 May 2009 08:45

disgrace!-
I agree Sasha- Lee should stand up and say ok Jason you are the Idol i will step down, out of pure decency! Being the absolute gentleman he is he would probably say no it isn't your fault we will share the title!
I think idols have lost all credibility I definitely won't vote again. I voted twice on the night and still waiting to receive my sms to say thankyou for your vote, so did Jason get my votes?? Posted on 12 May 2009 09:24
Step down!-
Sasha Lee should step down! Mnet should give her all the prizes minus the acutal contract as a sign of good faith but essentiall she should step down.. She was not the winner and I do not understand how her 'people' are allowing her to take the title... This will clearly haunt her career...

Well done to Jason! Posted on 12 May 2009 09:28

low blow, haha ;-)-
and not R2 an sms after the service provider takes their share, more like R1 if they were lucky Posted on 13 May 2009 10:56
MNET & Grapvine took R5million for duping the public-
Doesn't matter if MNET took the almost R5million for themselves.

They took almost R5million from the public from SMSes and in returned messed up royally. The only people winning on Idols was MNET and Grapevine.

Not sure how much they also took from the public from the call-in line. Posted on 13 May 2009 13:28
who makes the money?-
The Opeartors get more than 50% and Grapevine gets a few cents Posted on 15 May 2009 22:43
R5million made off SMSes, wow.-
If the combined SMS count for the contestants was 2.5 million votes at R2 a vote, then MNET made a good chunk of change. Pity for that R5million they couldn't get a service provider that wasn't a bottleneck for those SMSes. Posted on 13 May 2009 10:45
but what does the service provider earn ?-
lets ask who gets the money Posted on 15 May 2009 22:45
Tebogo, Polokwane
wow-
i think Jason is the true winner here,he should be crowned the winner Idol 2009, because i sms 40 times. Posted on 15 May 2009 09:29
