The outspoken chairperson of the Forum of Black Journalists and SABC' political editor Abby Makoe has resigned from the public broadcaster after nine months on the job. Makoe will be leaving at the end of the April, joining Jeremy Maggs, Lebo Monnamogolo and Sumitra Nydoo who have just recently announced their resignations from the SABC to work for new media organisations.

In a joint statement released on Friday, SABC head of news and current affairs, Snuki Zikalala said that the broadcast media has become more competitive and as a result, key personnel were targeted by new and existing competitors.

“Our journalists are well-trained and the SABC becomes a natural target for those players who are looking for good, strong editorial staff. However, we have retained a lot of skills and have also recruited some good talent, so listeners and viewers will still be able to access news of the highest quality from the national public broadcaster,” Zikalala said.

Zikalala added that the SABC wishes the departing staff, including Makoe, every success in the future.

Commented Makoe: “I am very sad to leave the SABC. Of all the media institutions for which I have worked, I found the SABC the most transformed and progressive. I have enjoyed every minute of my stay here, despite the numerous challenges that goes with working for Africa's biggest public broadcaster as a political editor. I am also pleased to leave the SABC on such a good note, and my heart will always be with my colleagues at Auckland Park.
