Community Chest Carnival 2014 postponement

The Community Chest Carnival is a fundraising platform, the success of which depends on our volunteers and corporate donors in order to generate a profit. The money raised at Carnival is then distributed amongst some 300 social development organisations which the Community Chest supports in the Western Cape.
A substantial decline in corporate donations of goods and services has meant that to run Carnival 2014 the Community Chest would need to make a considerable financial commitment. This puts donor money at risk.

In its current form, Carnival 2014 does not offer a reasonable prospect of a return on investment. Consequently, the only responsible decision is to postpone this year's event until a new financial model can be developed.

The Board and the Management of the Community Chest have made the difficult decision to postpone Carnival 2014. It was not a decision taken lightly, but one based on a careful review of the projected income for Carnival 2014.

Whilst this is a regrettable decision, and having due regard for the over 60 years of history of Carnival, the responsibility which rests on our shoulders as custodians of generating funds for the poor and the vulnerable demands of us to use donor funds in a responsible way. Over the following nine months we will work with all volunteers and stakeholders to strategise a new and exciting Carnival 2015 in order to provide the necessary funding to our community organisations at an acceptable level.

We hope we can rely on your input and continued support during this process.
