Deputy Minister and Dignity Dreams #unite4mandela in support of schoolgirls' education

Many young girls stay away from school during their menstrual cycle as they are unable to afford sanitary towels. Hence, the office of the Deputy Minister has partnered with Dignity Dreams, an NGO that's making a huge difference in the day-to-day lives of South Africa's schoolgirls by providing reusable sanitary towels that can be used for four years.

In putting an end to no pads no school for young girls, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Buti Manamela is set to walk 9.4km on Saturday, 22 November as part of the 2014 Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day taking place at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

He firmly believes that the education of young girls should not be put on hold while they go through their monthly menstrual cycle.

"We would like to be on board to raise awareness and funds so that more young girls can be afforded the dignity and protection they deserve during their monthly menstrual cycle while continuing with their education," said Deputy Minister Manamela.

Unite 2.0 campaign

The Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day is the anchor programme of the 2014 Unite 2.0 campaign, an initiative between Sport and Recreation South Africa and the Department of Arts and Culture to promote social cohesion and nation building using the power of sport and the arts.

The 2014 programme includes a 67km cycle, a 27km run, a 9.4km walk or run and a 5km walk. The sporting events will be followed by musical entertainment on the Union Building lawns.

Sandra Millar, Founder of Dignity Dreams, says, "We are honoured to have this opportunity to partner with Deputy Minister Manamela and would like to thank him for publicly supporting South Africa's schoolgirls."

The Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture day is firmly anchored on the fundamentals that unite us all as South Africans - social cohesion, nation building, patriotism and promoting world peace. These are the same ideals that our former President and Statesman Tata Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to and left us as a legacy.
