Five tips for expanding your home-based South African business to a global reach

As the owner of a South African business, it can be easy to fall into the trap of looking at your company as a primarily local entity. When most of your business comes from clients or customers located within your region, there's often no incentive to expand into the global market. Adjusting workflow and hiring additional employees is another factor that often prevents local businesses from being able to accommodate global expansion. Luckily, there are plenty of steps you can take to start earning profits in all sorts of currencies and time zones, including but not limited to the following:

1. Use social media to penetrate foreign markets

Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have tremendous brand awareness generating potential by distributing memes, infographics and informative/entertaining status updates. In fact, marketing on these mega platforms is one of the best ways to make money online regardless of the industry you're operating in.

2. Be active on global sales platforms

If you run a retail shop that sells products, one of your first moves should be setting up stores on third-party sites like eBay and Amazon. Likewise, if you offer services that can be rendered online then you may want to sign up for freelancing sites to start soliciting clients in other countries.

3. Launch translated marketing campaigns

If you're only marketing your company in English, you could be missing out on a sizable chunk of the global market. Fortunately, diversifying your efforts into other languages can be as simple as hiring a translator to translate your existing marketing materials. You may also want to have your website and/or app translated into a few major languages like Spanish, French, and German.

4. Follow international trends

If you're going to be dealing in foreign markets, it makes sense that you should stay on top of international business and pop culture news. Capitalising on trends is one of the fastest ways to generate viral attention and transform your burgeoning local company into a globally recognised brand. Google Trends and other keyword research tools are excellent for discovering topics and trends that you might otherwise completely overlook.

5. Network with foreign businesses

Whether you're a service provider, retailer, manufacturer or distributor, chances are there are companies in other countries that can put your brand name in front of prospects who occasionally travel to South Africa. Essentially, you want your company to come in discussions when someone says, "I know a company in South Africa who can help you with that." Such opportunities might be few and far in between, but for B2B businesses that deal with high-profit projects, even just a few new business relationships per year can do a lot to establish your brand with foreign buyers and investors.

No reason to stay only local

Even if your company is doing well just by dealing inside of South Africa, there's no denying that globally active companies almost always wind up with a better bottom line than their local-only counterparts.
