ArcelorMittal production to resume in March

ArcelorMittal SA expects some parts of the steel-making operations to resume at its Vanderbijlpark plant next month following the fire that damaged the facility on 9 February.
The steel producer said last week that assessments of the root causes of the fire and the recovery process had been undertaken with the assistance of ArcelorMittal Group's experts.

In the meantime‚ various ArcelorMittal plants have been contacted to supply semi-finished products to the local plant.

The company is diverting steel to the domestic customers from its Saldanha Works at the rate of about 40‚000 tons a month and is exploring the possibility of increasing production at that plant.

"While force majeure remains in effect‚ customers are placing orders for March and April and ArcelorMittal South Africa is confident it will be in a position to fulfil most of these requirements following the mitigation actions taken‚" the company said.
