Tuks FM, the University of Pretoria's campus radio station, has extended its signal strength to 1kW, which allows its broadcasting footprint to reach all of Pretoria and surrounding areas and the greater Johannesburg area as well.
The station has transformed into a brand that is popular on various media platforms, by generating content and providing memorable listenership experiences.
"Reflecting its audience, Tuks FM broadcasts in English and Afrikaans, offering a variety of opportunities to prospective clients," confirms Judy Milne, Director of The Media Connection, one of South Africa's leading community radio advertising specialists.
She explains that Tuks FM focuses on creating quality and value, and brings enjoyment as well as satisfaction to its customers and listeners. "The power of Tuks FM lies in the connection it makes with its audience on a daily basis, therefore successfully delivering external organisations' marketing messages and securing return on investment."
"Tuks FM has expanded far beyond just being a campus-based community radio station, it is now a prominent trendsetter known for high industry standards, top quality advertising and successful events management. We have the power to influence buying decisions of young consumers," says Station Manager, Loutjie van der Merwe.
The station targets a universal cosmopolitan audience, comprising of people between the ages of 15 and 35, irrespective of race, sex, culture or beliefs. It has an extensive mix of pop-rock music complimented by informative content including news, sport and infotainment that is relevant to our target audience.
Tuks FM has a listenership of 46 000 on average (SAARF - RAMS Feb 2013), with female (40%) and male (60%) listeners between the ages of 15-18 (8%), 19-24 (41%), 25-34 (42%) and 35+ (9%).
"We have a Facebook following of +47,500, and the 6th most 'Likes' on Facebook compared to all other radio stations in South Africa, including commercial stations," says van der Merwe. "We also have +12,000 followers on Twitter, and the 8th most followers on Twitter compared to all other radio stations in South Africa, including commercial stations. We also have 55,000 YouTube video views."
There's no wonder then that Tuks FM consistently gets recognition for its standard of excellence, and won numerous awards in 2012 including Campus Station Of The Year - MTN Radio Awards.
Its strong training and development programme is a consistent breeding ground for broadcasting talent within South Africa, and numerous alumni have become household names in the world of radio and television.
"Tuks FM's multiple media marketing platform facilitates opportunities for product activation, on-air advertising, events and sponsorships, enabling advertisers to grow their client base. The station offers marketers and advertisers the opportunity to utilise the power of community radio to target the student and young adult market in Gauteng," says Milne.
Radio has more consumers than all other forms of media. It is also the most affordable medium of advertising in South Africa. "Tuks FM therefore provides advertisers the opportunity to quickly and effectively reach a large section of the population that many other mediums cannot successfully target," she adds.
