'Sies' sees DJ fired

Ditaba Malapane, a DJ at the Phalaborwa community radio station in Limpopo, has been dismissed from work for allegedly speaking Afrikaans on the air.
Popularly known as DJ Eddie Crook, Malapane, co-founder of the popular radio station based in Namakgale, was officially dismissed from work on Wednesday for using the Afrikaans word "sies".

Malapane presented a breakfast show on weekdays. The programme focused on current issues.

"My topic at the time was constructive criticism in the workplace. My sin was to use the word sies when referring to people who speak badly about their colleagues to their bosses," Malapane said.

"Sies is an expression of disgust. The definition of sies is shame or pity.

"I did not see anything wrong with using the word because I was expressing my disgust at people who back-stab their colleagues in an effort to curry favour with their bosses."

'There is more to this than meets the eye'
Malapane said a few days after the show he was called to a meeting by station management, where he was suspended for using the "vulgar word" on the air and ridiculing other presenters.

"I appeared at a disciplinary hearing last week and was dismissed on Wednesday. I know there is more to this than meets the eye.

"The real issue is that I was at the forefront of DJs who were against people drawing two salaries as teachers or school principals and also as part of the station's management," he said.

Malapane is not new to controversy. In 2010 he was suspended after two female presenters at the station - whom he was allegedly dating - fought over him, breaking expensive studio equipment.

The chairman of the station's board of directors, Matome Lebea, said he was not informed about Malapane's dismissal and referred this reporter to the station's monitoring and compliance manager, Easy Moagi, who confirmed the dismissal.

"We can confirm that Malapane is no longer in our employ. He was dismissed yesterday for using vulgar language and degrading his colleagues on the air," he said.

Is this what is called "News" in SA? Posted on 7 May 2012 15:13

Jammer, Bob - I think this *IS* newsworthy.

And, as a brand consultant, YOU really should be able to see it for what it is as well.

The story is a great exemplar of the state of an entire sector of SA media. While there are some superb examples of success at community radio level, far too many of the operators in this arena are petty fiefdoms that are either plundered for personal gain (which seems to be one of the issues at play here) or stifled and restricted by one person's agenda (often a conservative religious ideology).

Community radio should be a raucous and robust marketplace of ideas that underpins a people's democracy, but it is hampered by a desperate need for capacity building for both management and on-air staff.

As a sector, you'll surely agree, it's brand identity IS this story. What's required is for thought leaders, knowledge holders and power brokers to stop dismissing these sad "facepalm" stories as tiresome trivia and to start seeing them as symptomatic of a fundamental challenge that our media faces.

Instead of sniping churlishly, perhaps making your expertise available in some small way, or at least interrogating the role that the organisations that should be advancing the sector are playing, might be a better use of your intellect and insight? Posted on 8 May 2012 14:03

Ag, Siesa! Really? What's next? Smells like a snake in the grass / hidden agenda. Can I say "snake" or "grass"? Posted on 7 May 2012 15:53

@ Nicolette - Absolutely not: A snake is a bad creature and grass is a DRUG! Posted on 7 May 2012 16:01

SIES man this is RIDICULOUS. Seriously. I don't know how many times I've said "sies" on air - I still work. There certainly is a lot more to this story. If a station can get rid of "top talent" on such grounds then you wonder what value this talent actually brings to the station.

A lot of community radio stations are run like tuck-shops, really saddening for individuals who go into these stations and hope to grow and develop their craft as broadcasters - all they end up doing is killing the talent.

Sorry Mr. Breakfast DJ, SIES station management! Posted on 16 May 2012 19:31
