New YFM DJ lineup released

31 Mar 2008 10:2596 commentsBizLike
Following 24-year old Vukile Zondi's appointment as programming manager in January 2008, the new 99.2 YFM lineup, launching tomorrow, Tuesday, 1 April 2008, sees primetime slots given to DJs who are significantly younger than their counterparts across the country. Not only that, four presenters and one news reporter have been taken from the Y Academy training initiative launched last year [See our Poll].
The new sound of YFM will launch with Bridget Masinga and AK Shabalala hosting the 6am – 9am Breakfast show. The show will be hosted the two on alternate weeks with well-known and much loved personalities co-hosting – from TV, comedy, entertainment (society and celeb gossip) and the music industry.

“As one of the youngest radio programming managers in the country, my primary goal was to really push the younger generation of South African radio talent,” comments Zondi.

“I strongly believe that the only people who can convincingly engage, talk to, inspire and entertain the youth are people that fall very closely within the same age group. Our new lineup is exciting, diverse and truly representative of young South Africans today.”

Appoint younger DJs

The past year has seen young DJs taking a significant share of audience; this has subsequently influenced the station to appoint younger DJs and place existing young talent into primetime programming. This youth trend can also be seen across YFM's programming schedule and behind the scenes in areas such as show producing, engineering and sales and marketing.

According to the station, one of most significant projects it launched last year is the Y Academy, an initiative to formalise the process of talent identification and recruitment of young radio talent. This intensive training program exposes post tertiary candidates to all the key elements of radio broadcasting. A critical outcome of the program is the skilled pool of fresh young talent who can make a meaningful contribution to the industry. The station is then able to select the training programme's star performers and add them to its existing pool of talent.

“As a youth station we are passionate about ensuring that we remain 100% committed to our core audience of 16 – 24 year old listeners,” explains Zondi.

“Young urban South Africans are creating their own very unique landscape and they are in the best position to define their daily experiences. They are just as comfortable relaxing with their friends in Alexandra as they are hanging out a one of Sandton's new hotspots. Our new DJ line up will strongly embrace our township roots whilst also indulging a little in the more suburban scenario. This will come through over the airwaves and also in the way in which we plan to engage with our listeners at a grassroots level.”

Local content quota

YFM is also increasing its self-imposed local music content quota from 50% to 60%.

Who is really running things at Y??-
Whoever is running things at Y must be biting nails now because losing listeners is very easy these days. Y started with Soweto Community Radio Jocks(now JOZIfm), and was a hit, that formular will work again. Community Radio Jocks are more talented and hungrier than SBU, and all the washed up former top dj's. Get to community radio station and bring them to Y. Posted on 31 Mar 2008 11:53

Why Not?-
We as South African constantly moan and complain about the fact that our youth are never 'shown the way' and given a chance.
Yes we've all had our favourites on YFM... but we still weren't happy with them. The Y academy has given our youth an avenue to success and achievable goals. Why would we not want to support that??
Yes I agree Bridget is not the best choice for breakfast but let's give her a chance..she might just suprise u!

Y as a station has tried different formulas recently to bring back the spark they once had. This might just be the spark we need.
Lets give them a chance..and lets not forget Y is a 'youth' radio station, so let them cater to their target audience and if we dont like it, it's simple, change the station! Posted on 31 Mar 2008 12:39
Bcoz Y-
Anon my bredda that's a fair point ur raising, but 1 cud ask, wats da purpose of community & campus radios?..aren't they the ones wu shud give "youth" that platform so that wen they're mature enough can then look forward 2 movin on 2 a commercial platform lyk Y?...is crap radio a gud excuse for youth tranformation?...anyway let's wait & see.As 4 Bridget wat any other surprise can she possibly have? YFM totally loosing it's direction-
Same with the affirmative action, that you'll try and bridge the gap for the previously disadvantages whereas not taking into consideration the fact that in terms of competition you will be beaten by your rivals. The name or the brand Y'fm rather doesn't mean anything to us listeners. If you don't produce quality shows hosted by high calibre personel you won't make and we will switch to your competitors.

There's always a room for improvement and empowerment but make sure that you balance the two. Atleast in 2006, you had Fresh alongside Thato and Mpho (who was reading traffic at that time). That collaboration was top-notch. Mpho learnt alot from Dj Fresh and Thato (Big Head) though sometimes they were on her case (that's part of the grooming, patience and pressure).

But that's how you learn in the business, can't put amateurs on their own.

I'm not dissing the new Dj's but concerned with the quality and the operations of Y.....

Guys, make up your mind..... Posted on 31 Mar 2008 13:02

Rest in peace Yfm-
The truth of the matter is:

1) Competitive advantage:

Yfm seems to be operating without competitive advantage lately. In it's inception in 1997, Unknown Dj's were hired and they made a name for themselves.BUT, those were more competitive compared to the current line up.Y is not using it's limited resources on the greatest opportunity to increase it's sales and achieve SUSTAINABLE competitive advantage.

The question is HOW does Yfm going to engage it's customers, prospects and competitors in the market arena??

Those DJ's who were part of Yfm in 1997 till early 2007, managed to lift Yfm. That means they managed to stay for a period of about ten years.(a decade).Almost in every corner of S.A and it's neigbouring countries, people were taking about high performance of YFM. In 2007, a new revolution occured at Yfm. Still, there was no competitive advantage but they can still manage only if they managed to stick to those Dj's available (RudeBoy, Sanza, Amon,Thato, Pabi and others.

2) Corperate startegy, mission, and goals:

The questtion is "Who are the customers of YFM currently? The customers constitutes the source of company revenue. That is, if customers are not convinced that they will get a return on investment, they will obviously look somewhere else. The new line up especially the morning show, it's mostly where advertisers buy radio time. Looking at most Gauteng radio stations, the morning drive and sometimes drive time slot - 3-6 is where they don't gamble. But Yfm seems to be gambling.

For example, the following radio stations have a better competitive advantage over Yfm because of the above mentined rational:

1.5fm - Gareth
2.Metro - Bad boy T
3.Kayafm - Phat Joe
4.Ukhozi - Mr Magic
5.Radio 2000 - Just Ice
6.Highveld stereo -Jeremy and the team
7.Lesedi - Chomza

Loooking at the above, advetisers can't afford to miss the opportunity of making a contract to advertise in such radio shows. They really mean business. A commercial radio station accumulate revenue by having a strong and solid corporate strategy as well as attracting customers "those with resources, who are involved in desion making and are able to control the organisation. In this case Yfm seems to be concentrating on Youth only. That is a danger.

But Oskido, AK and Chilli M have long passsed the age limit that YFM is taking about.(16 - 24) I don't think Yfm is getting it right here.

My advise for Yfm is to hire DJ's with experience while grooming the Young DJ's. In that way, it will be able to have competitive advantage in Gauteng. But the path Yfm is leading, is absoluetly terrible.

Rest in Peace YFm. Posted on 31 Mar 2008 14:25

Oh my God-
Radio follower u have a point, the Youth needs to be groomed and i think Bridgette needed to be groomed before she was even put on Radio cause her voice is just not for Radio or shemust be taken for Voice training ke atleast!! cause Yhoooo!! i do not understand how the youth can stand her voice very (Squeckyyyyy) i must say and she must just stop saying Sweety, lovey on radio it's just not attractive...but i guesse the Programme managaner himself shame he's only 24 yrs understable, my brother if this is not a Prank you guys need to go for a proper STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING and discuss your proper Line-up.. i personally would've voted for Chilli M to do the Breakfast show atleast he's experienced as for Miss B ( God forbid) Posted on 31 Mar 2008 16:27

All I gotta say is there is no way people are gonna tune into AK and Bridgette from 6 to 9 in the morning instead of the other shows out there (even Bad Boy T's show is a better choice). I think YFM is making a huge mistake, and let me be the first to say RIP YFM. Posted on 31 Mar 2008 17:16

Not really a joke-
Well RadioMan, the lineup indicated here is not really offpoint. This is the lineup scheduled for YFM. Only difference here is that DJ Sbu is not included, reason being he has not officially been signed up by YFM, yes they will take him but there were a fe glitches with his contract so possibilities are that he starts in May. but in essence, this is the real lineup. AK and Bridget will just have to hold the fort till Sbu starts. Posted on 31 Mar 2008 21:15

The Lineup-
The main man for Radio is back on a more serious note now, ok there's no April fool's joke with the lineup, besides if it's a joke, then how else would it be placed because these are basically all the DJ's at YFM.

Mpho has been given the daily 10-12 morning slot.
The only puzzling thing was the Tholi B & Mo Flava setup. Initially it was setup the other way round, Mo Flava was supposed to move to 12-3noon and Tholi B 6-9pm but it's been swopped the other way round. Tholi B has the afternoon slot.

As for DJ Sbu, mmmm don't count your chickens before they hatch bra........he quit Ukhozi now he is joblessssssss!!!!

Ok joking, joking. With regards to the Breakfast show, Bridget and AK have to basically hold it down for the next two weeks minimum to a month maximum for numerous reasons, those being that contractual issues with SBU have not yet been settled and simply put, we are being made to wait for what's best to come, that being Sbu. AK is moving to weekends 9-12 Saturday and Sunday 9-12noon, a bit sad but it was predicted. Posted on 1 Apr 2008 08:34

Youth My Foot-
What is all this talk about youth, 16 to 24 target market. The late DJ Khabzela was deep into his thirties when got a weekday slot and WE the so called target market loved him.....

I feel in order to get a job on YFM you must have appeared on a TV advert or Presented a TV show or something like that.

Community radio station is where the true untappep talent is...

I HOPE and PRAY This NEW line UP is and APRIL FOOL's Day JOKE.... Posted on 1 Apr 2008 08:40

The new lineup-
Ya well, DJ SBU is still definitely on his way, RadioMan and Sefateng are on point. But one thing YFM must stop is this whole hide and seek bullshit with their lineup, just lay it down on the table as Sefateng said in his comment.
Lay everything down and let people decide on whether they will listen or not, don't force them to listen, attract them.

AK and Bridget were the only weekend DJ's that could be put in Breakfast part-time because management could obviously not not use any of the weekday DJ's since they have new shosw to concentrate on. Posted on 1 Apr 2008 08:50

WHY OH WHY!?!-
Is YFM seriously serious????? You can't be serious man. A person will now be forced to listen to Kaya and Metro FM throughout the day. We don't even have a break from the annoying ones. Bridget THEN Mpho. Is Vukile serious????? Couldn't Mo do Breakfast, then Tholi B do 9-12 (as in, get rid of the 9 @ 9 nonsence), then place all the other dumb-Bo's after 12????? YFM Management
The Lineup --
KayZ, let me explain something to you my friend. It works like this.....we could not place Mo or Tholi B or any of the weekday DJ's in space for breakfast temporarily because as one of the people who commented had indicated earlier, they have their own shows to prepare for and work on. So we had to go and get someone from the weekend slots because they are not busy this week and have no show to work on during the weekday, it works that way in Radio, that's just how it is, and it makes it easier for Programmiong purposes. Having a DJ have a show more than once a day is actually now allowed on Radio, it should not happen, it does happen at times but it actually shouldn't.

So the weekend DJ's are Phuti, AK, Bridget, Oskido and the new DJ's complete the weekend lineup. So from the DJ's placed on the weekend lineup, we had to choose from them, hence AK and Bridget, it was either going to be Phuti or Oskido, we can't place the new DJ's on breakfast as yet, has to be people that ere familiar with YFM and whave been around with the station for a while.

Hope it all makes sense, stand by foor DJ S'bu soon.
We are just finalising things here and there, STANDBY.
Thanks for the love!!! Much appreciated, YFM is creating waves again and aGAIN. Posted on 1 Apr 2008 09:16

AK 's talent wasted-
AK's talent is really wasted, weekend again?? Ak proved his talent years ago on AKWB thats why he ended up landing the weekday prime slot(s). there is no talented and exciting dj on SA currently like him, especially for the yfm target market.
obviously the new progrems manager thinks otherwise, unless there is issues between him and management, you know how it goes in radio.
Lastly, this Bridgett kid is IRRITAITING and NOISY.

Does anyone know when is Rudeboy starting at Auckland park? Posted on 1 Apr 2008 12:18
Tholi C
AK-
Katli, I agree with you hey!!! It was quite surprising to hear that AK is being shipped back to the weekends. He was hot on AKWB and that's why Greg Maloka gave him a platform for weekday Radio, but he must be careful. I would advise to start looking at the exit at YFM for next March 2009, thwey are going to pull a Mr.T on him, move him from weekdays and take him to weekends then AXE him later on.

The problem is..... from here onwards for him there is no more growth, the minute management moves you from a daily slot to weekends, it's a sign that you are just an addition to the DJ's and to the lineup, nothing more.

It's a pity AK, I'm just concerned even he himself doesn't know where to from here, for AK it has always been about Radio, hopefully he has a PLAN B.

The 1st show I enjoyed and felt was worth listening to on YFM is Tholi B's show, The Y're or Wire, don't know. Sounding reasonably good. DJ SBU, please come through dude, the delay is so 2005 and lame. Just come through and do your thing, you've made your point.

Rudeboy@Auckland park-
I suppose when you say Rudeboy starts at Auckland Park you mean that he has a job at the SABC meaning one of the SABC Radio stations. No ways, that's false info, Rudeboy is not employed by any of the Radio Stations.

Does anyone know where Amon is moving to, there were rumours of Metro FM etc, what happened, where is he going? Posted on 1 Apr 2008 13:21
Unathi
Tholi B & Tholi C-
I suppose because you refer to yourself as "Tholi C" it's only sensible for you to say Tholi B's show is hot, clearly there's a groupie thing going down ne...
But yeah, it's true, I'm listening to it, it's a nice show, content is good, features are reasonably well planned and well put. Hope consistency in tight programming prevails.

Otherwise there's nothing else to really look forward to, Chilli M and Mo Flava have the same shows, let's hear what Lee has to offer at 10pm tonight.

And yes DJ SBU, just get it started already now, the waiting is not killing us anyway so just come through and do your thing and let us be the judges, don't keep us waiting as if there's magic to deliver, just come through and start working and let's see if any significant changes come through.

And yes, where's Amon going, what about Mr T and Pabi?

Maybe they should all just follow their former boss Bondo to Mpumalanga and join M Power FM, or capricorn ko Shabba. Posted on 1 Apr 2008 13:34

"Saving Money"-
The truth is:

Yfm is banking on Young presenters becasue they don't demand that much.....that is the reason to fire the so called "aged" DJ's. (16 - 24) is just "rubbish". I agree with the issue of grooming young talent. But the way Yfm CEO and Program Manager are handling issues at Y is not the right way.

Yfm is saving money for their CEO. I thought the CEO would also be someone young as they claim to hire youth. But the CEO is almost 50. What a shame to run a youth radio station.

Yfm is contradicting it's self......the CEO should also be a young talent as well. In that way, I will be convinced that there is not CONTRADICTION. But the former CEO new exactly what youth wants. The current CEO is messing YFM.

By the way, YFM IS SAVING MONEY...YFM doesn't want to pay high salaries for the DJ' PERIOD......PERIOD.....PERIOD.... Posted on 1 Apr 2008 13:43

Now this could be either be an April fool's joke or serious. Apparently the sacking comes after yesterday's article on the Daily Sun about YFM struggling to make ends meet. Board Members and Executive Directors had a meeting this morning and it was therefore decided that Pillay be relieved of his duties.

Now this as said earler on could probably be an April Fool's joke or not......but maybe it is serious. Was anyone listening to the news bulletin? Posted on 1 Apr 2008 14:06

KANTHAN PILLAY GIVEN THE AXE-
YFM's boss has been fired by the board, AYEYE DJ SBU. Who's gonna negotiate your contract now bra???

Apparently YFM is going through tough times financially and the board is refusing to understand how YFM is offering SBU so much money when there is so little of it available. That's partly the reason why Sbu is not in the lineup as yet, negotaiations are heated up becauyse his annual package ranges around 5-6million, YFM acn't afford to spend that on him alone, it's a risk that might not have a return on investment.
Sbu might just be without a Radio job if things go wrong. Posted on 1 Apr 2008 14:15

mmm, this is why they are going to loose listenership, just keep treating listeners like idiots, julle sal kak sien. Sbu is not getting 5 million, eish, darkies, u like to exaggerate, it might be 2 hai 5! Whether Kanthan is joking or he is serious, it's all the same, he knows absolutely nothing about radio. i've been reading all these comments, and about 95% of listeners are not impressed with the line up, even if it turns out to be a joke, how do u justify having bridgette and mpho on air? Tholi, your are good but eish, calm down, phela wena u've got fans even as far as northpole...he he he he, chilli is on to u! Posted on 1 Apr 2008 14:39

Nah, I doubt it.-
I heard that but it's probably just another YFM April Fool's joke. I won't jump till something puts a stamp upon that. Nah, it's a slim chance, Indians hardly get fired, they always find a way out, for sure. Posted on 1 Apr 2008 14:36

Enough with the gimmicks already!-
My goodness, a radio station is only as good as the content of its programming. Using that criteria,"WHYFM" has lost the plot. All these sideshows are only exposing how desperate they are to keep people interested. Posted on 1 Apr 2008 14:53

DJ's salaries-
Speaking of DJ Sbu's 2,5million salary, which is apprently about R3Million currently. Generally, how much do these primetime Radio DJ's get paid? Bo DJ Fresh, Gareth Cliff, Bad Boy T(Thomas), Chilli M, Glen Lewis, Unathi, Phat Joe etc. At some point when Mark Gillman was at 5fm, in his last three years his salary was ranging around R6million, (no joke).

How much do these guys get paid? even if it's not the exact figures, just a rough estimate, I'm just curious.

HOLA Posted on 1 Apr 2008 15:20
here we go...-
If you tell me how much you earn, I'll tell you how much they earn. So, how much do you earn? Posted on 1 Apr 2008 16:43

DJ's Salaries-
Fresh used to get around R40.000 in 1999. You can imagine now how much he is getting at 5fm.

DJ's such Tich Mataz in 1996 used to get around R55.000 monthly and somebody got jealous and was deported to Zimbabwe.

So guys, it pays to be a radio DJ this days. Imagine how much Phat Joe is earning. Phat Joe can't join Kayafm for nothing. That guy means business. To him, "it's take it or leave it" That Phat Joe. Posted on 1 Apr 2008 17:48

DJ Sbu is boring and has no talent for radio-
What is all the hype about Dj Sbu doing YFM breakfast because you are all going to be dissapointed as this guy has no talent for radio. He is going to bore you with his lousy jokes and irritating voice. When Phat Joe was still on YFM Sbu was copying his style by dissing and insulting people on air and it didn't work.

He got a slot on YFM because his music career was picking up and management thought he will have listeners due to his popular music and when that did not work he was replaced.YFM should have brought Adil from MetroFM to host the breakfast show because he is funny, intelligent, creative(the best on radio in SA)and entertaining. It must be done soon because if MetroFM can give him a weekday slot it will be difficult to get him. THE CEO THING, AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE-
Aaaaaghhhh, the whole Kanthan Pillay thing being fired was just an April Fool's joke. I wonder how he feels about joking about something that people would actually love to see happen, sad indeed.
Chilli M is no acting CEO, not by a long shot. By late yesterday it all sounded too casual to be the truth so it became obvious that it was a prank.

What was Bridget interviewing Fresh about, I missed that.

And really now, what's the story with DJ SBU, does anyone know, this really sucks. YFM has got the wrong formula with regards to this whole thing. EISH Posted on 2 Apr 2008 08:45

The Y CEO sucks-
I have said this before. The problem with Y FM is the CEO,what's his name Pillay. That guy knows nothing about radio, especially black radio.Does he even know where Soweto,Tembisa or Kagiso is situated?Don't think so.And he goes around with his arrogant attitude thinking he knows what the youth of this province want, pleaaaaase.Looking at the line up the only people who are keeping people tuned to Y are MO,THOLI B,CHILLI M,AK MacG and OSKIDO.I think CHILLI should do Breakfast show.MO do the afternoon show and MAG G do the 6 to 9 show.As for Bridgette,it's not really working. She is the same as Pabi Moloi. They just don't fit into Y fm at all same goes for Phuti. The is nothing wrong with bringing in new talent as long as you get the right people in it's fine. But know we are subjected to pretty faces/bimbo heads with no talent or whatsoever to do Prime time slots. At some point Khabzela(May His Soul Rest In Peace) didn't get a slot at METRO FM because his English was not up to scratch and guess what,he bacame the biggest thing ever to hit radio.Which goes to show that it's not about The GREAT ENGLISH u speak but it's about talent.Y needs someone who people from EKASI and the youth not these fakes like Bridgette and Phuti who can't even speak there mother tongoue propely. To MO FLAVA,CHILLI M,THOLI B,MAC G and OSKIDO big ups gents u guys are on fire and don't let anyone tell u otherwise including that PILLAY GUY. Lineup - Kanthan-
The lineup in all honesty is really not that bad BUT since AK and Bridgette are the one's grafting in till Mr greater than all else "Michael Jackson high on his horse S'busiso Leope" decides to just come and work and stop making us anticipate nothing more than an inexperienced Radio jock who gets love for his talking and funny skills and nothing else, maybe AK should just hold the fort, they really didn't have to alternate between the two, or better yet they shgould have both done the show with Bridgette as a co-host then, at least.....because AK knows how to keep things in control, no offence to Brdigette but not for Breakfast, come on YFM, didn't you learn from your experimenting with pabi, it just does not make sense, goes to show and also proves what everybody has been saying that Mr "Indian Flute & Curry Pillay" knows absolutely nothing about Radio, he should go to Jacaranda, Lotus FM or Highveld, he might do a better job there, black urban youth Radio is not his thing, and it won't be any time soon, please somebody get rid of jhim ,we love YFM and we don't want to leave because of one insensible idiot but at the rate things are going, we have no reason to keep it locked.

WE ARE BEGGING PLEASE, SIYANICELA just listen to the masses. Kanthan is not the man for the job, why don't you see that. Somebody pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease hear us out. Get rid of Kanthan Pillay, otherwsie YFM will become no more very soon, he's not cracking it.

This whole Indian mafia business at YFM and ETV must stop.

Kanthan plese, don't be stubborn, quit while you are still ahead. Can't you see that ever since you stepped in things have gone wrong, you can't force people to see something that is not there.

Loyiso Gola yesterday indicated oin the breakfast jokingly that YFM have no adverts, and when there is an advert, it comes after 30minutes and lasts for 15-20 seconds then it's back to music, that's not good for a supposingly urbanised commercial station. Posted on 2 Apr 2008 10:51

The Chronicle RadioMan
True that-
I agree 500% with what Benny just said. Let's make sense of something quickly regarding adverts and advertising on Radio. When we say a Radio station is making money, they should advertsie AT LEAST three times in an hour and the total number of adverts should average on something between 7 & 9minutes, 11 minutes maximum.

Meaning......... everytime a station goes to ads, the adverts collectively should last for about 45-75seconds minimum to at least 2minutes or 150 seconds (2minutes and 30seconds) maximum, you cannot advertise for too long like on T.V. people might switch the station.

Now Radio makes most of it's money or rather collects most revenue from advertising and live reads and obviously if the adverts are longer then it means there's more money coming in, (makes sense). Most SABC Radio stations (Metro FM, 5FM, Ukhozi, Motsweding, Lesedi, Ikwekwezi etc advertise about three to four times in an hour, at 10past the hour, 25past the hour, 20 before the hour and 10minutes before the hour (example 6:10, 6:20, 6:40 and 6:50). Those adverts last anything between 45-75 seconds and 90-105 seconds maximum on average for these stations.

But even independent stations like Highveld, Jacaranda, 702, Cape Talk, Igagasi average on almost the same time span. Meaning............ they are making money, plain and simple.

Now back to YFM, they advertise on average 2-3times in an hour, at 20minutes after the hour and 25minutes before the next hour, and about 2minutes before the hour (notice how they always go for ads just before a news bulletin).

BUT. How long do their ads last??? about 25seconds on average, then they go back to music. So they throw in one advert and go back and play a song just to create a split between the ads otherwise basically their adverts last on average for about 90seconds in a whole hour but they split them into three adverts withinthe hour to at least indicate that they are advertising .

Bottom line, they do not have a lot of clients left that are advertsing with them and the one's that are there.................well it's only a matter of time.
Reminds of of Radio BOP when it was heading towards the end, same thing was happening. So inevitably YFM needs a miracle at this stage. Posted on 2 Apr 2008 11:10
Female presenters-
KG Moeketsi,Phindi G,Penny Lebyane,Azania,Bertha Charuma,etc...why can't these new kids take from these radio sheroes instead of sounding like model c cheerleaders Posted on 2 Apr 2008 11:12

AMEN-
Interesting pointers raised about their advertising there RadioMan.

And come to think of it I have noted all of these things. That is why they (YFM) can play on average about 12songs an hour in their prime time slots, which should be almost impossible except in a case of these late night shows, not much serious advertising is done there so in essence it is possible on these graveyard shifts. But to achieve that during primetime is a sin in Radio, means you don't have anything else to do.

Stations like Kaya FM, Highveld Stereo and Metrofm and 5FM play about 6-7 and 8 at most songs during their drive time slots because that's when the imporant revenue and adverts are placed so Chilli M and the people at YFM breakfast throw in many more songs and less advertsing and less quality content.

We need not be rock scientists to analyse this people, come on now. This is straightforward. I would advise YFM to shutdown for about three months and go back to the drawing board and come back with the essential plan.

YFM released a statement on the April Fool's CEO "sacking"-
HERE IT IS:

There's a new article on the Bizcommunity homepage, it's the latest.

Kanthan aint going nowhere

Boo hoo, Kanthan Pillay is here to stay. Hundreds of people were caught napping by our April Fools Joke yesterday. People are still commenting in web blogs on the said dismissal of YFM CEO Kanthan Pillay. YFM News coined a classic story yesterday saying Pillay was given the boot following a heated dispute during a recent shareholders' meeting. Even reports that the station's top DJ Chilli M had been appointed acting CEO did not give the game away. The joke stems from a Monday report by the mass circulating Daily Sun newspaper that the station is struggling during Pillay's watch. The paper reports this yawn as fact without a giving Y management a right to set the record straight. The joke was a stroke to expose the lunacy of recent reports that YFM is in financial distress, is losing listerners and is up for sale. The truth is that YFM is at an interesting phase where it is expected to set new trends in radio broadcasting. The big project spear-headed by Pillay is expected to combine radio, print media and audio visual media in one pot. Posted on 2 Apr 2008 11:43

Analyse this statement

"The truth is that YFM is at an interesting phase where it is expected to set new trends in radio broadcasting. The big project spear-headed by Pillay is expected to combine radio, print media and audio visual media in one pot.

They are not disputing the fact that they are running out of revenue.

Anyone in radio knows the breakfast slot is a privilege that should be given to "well Experienced" jocks, who have been in the industry for some time.

Therefore Bridget CANNOT drive the breakfast show properly, she is hanging herself. The radio presenting ladder stops at breakfast, beyond that is propably management if not the sack.

Topic specific shows - Y management or people in the know??-
Hi

Is the content on the Yfm shows topic specific? If so, please break i down for me. Not just the title of the show, but the content
Example - AK and Lee - Hip hop etc?

Would it not be better to try this instead of all the Radio Personalities are not saying or playing the same thing all day long? (Note: Radio Personalities - are not DJ's)

So maybe have one of the lousy one's such as Bridgette doing a show tha focusses only on the underground scene, the music, the people, the fashion, the culture. That way, content is much fulfilling and the new or lousy DJ's can learn more about providing entertaining information and understanding the things that drive music culture.
It also offers the station an opportunity to approach advertisers with more than just the music. In a way even giving a face to the listener, as brands are trying to reach the consumer more and more.

I also think that we should not forget that the youth do not all come from the townships or relate to it. Not everything on Y has to be about Kasi, but it is important, as the majority of the listeners are township dwellers.
(On that note, have a show dedicated to showcasing Kasi fashion, culture, music, people - a window to those that aren't aware)

Radio should be about the music, yes, but also cretive entertainment, information, education, development, inspiration and touching people. Does YFM do this is any way? Does the new line up reflect the needs of it's true listeners - not just the moaners?

Would love to read your thoughts

What a mess! What happened to Y? I think the reason Paul and Sanza left are obvious. Bridgette in the morning? Who can she engage really? AK, what is he still doing there? He's the only one left from the awesome talent that started Y. Does he really think he'll rescue Y?
This is sad. I actually stopped listening to Y. I guess maybe all good things come to an end!

YFM is kinda losing its flavour... But the music they play is great because it represents South Africa and the youth culture, but something is just missing... I miss YFM back in the day when I couldn't live without it, but today there is no problem when I miss shows, because there is nothing calling me... YFM used to speak to me, but today that voice is being put on mute, and I hear no voice calling me... Miss you YFM...
