Thebe Exhibitions and Projects honours Mandela through promoting literacy

For this year's Mandela Day on 18 July 2013, staff from exhibition and events company Thebe Exhibitions and Projects (TEP) gave 67 minutes to help the Mothers Touch Learning Academy in Diepsloot, Johannesburg.

TEP managing director Carol Weaving says the group has decided to invest in the promotion of literacy in South Africa: "Education is the key to a bright future in our country. Today we saw the beginning of many more initiatives aimed at instilling a love for books and reading among underprivileged children in South Africa."

TEP staff members donated story books to the academy and actually read from these books to children between one and six years old. 530 books were also donated by Cambridge University Press.

"We take the ability to read and access information for granted," says Weaving, "and forget that this basic skill is fundamental in us being able to build our businesses. We therefore want to inspire young individuals and open their minds to learning. This was the first of many interactions to come and through this initiative we want to contribute to the legacy of former President Mandela.

"We also wish him a very happy and blessed 95th birthday."
