Raincoats and Gloves Drive 2013 appeals to community members for support

With winter comes cold and rain, and thousands of underprivileged school children must face the weather without warm, protective clothing. In an effort to make a difference, Metropolitan Health and Heart 104.9FM in association with the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) are collecting raincoats and gloves during July to help Western Cape school children in need.
Raincoats and Gloves Drive 2013 appeals to community members for support

The second annual Raincoats and Gloves Drive will call on the support of community members to buy or bring in their new or used raincoats and gloves. Last year, the campaign received overwhelming support with over 3500 new and used raincoats and gloves collected for school children. The goal for this year's campaign is to collect at least 5000 raincoats and gloves.

A worthy cause

"It is really sad to know that there are many children who miss school on a regular basis because they don't have a raincoat or warm clothing," says Nosipho Yedwa, marketing manager at Metropolitan Health. "During the month of July, we appeal to individuals and corporates to open their hearts and wallets to donate new and used children's raincoats and gloves to this campaign, or make a donation to the Peninsula School Feeding Association - who will distribute the raincoats to needy schools."

Show your support by dropping off new and used raincoats and gloves at collection points at Metropolitan Health Cape Town branch and Heart104.9FM studio in Green Point from 4-31 July 2013.

On 18 July, Heart 104.9FM will broadcast live outside the Metropolitan Health offices in St George's Mall between 12.00-3.00pm. Join Clarence Ford and the Heart 104.9 FM team and bring your raincoats and gloves in support of this worthy cause.

Bringing warmth to those in need

As a final appeal to the public, Heart 104.9 FM will do a second live broadcast from the centre court stage in Canal Walk on Friday, 26 July. People will be able to drop off raincoats and gloves at this event, as well as at collection bins situated at all information desks in Canal Walk between 26-31 July.

"As much as you can't teach a hungry child, neither can you teach a child who is cold and wet," says Andy Du Plessis, director of PSFA. "We hope that through this campaign we will be able to help keep the school children that we work with warm and dry this winter. We encourage everyone to show their support and generosity to help us achieve this goal."

In August, Metropolitan Health and PSFA will visit various disadvantaged schools throughout the Western Cape to drop off the donations of raincoats and gloves received from the public.
