The City’s municipal courts deal specifically with municipal matters such as traffic and by-law offences. The Cape Town municipal court has been operational since the end of January this year at its new location along the Strand Street Concourse.
Fines imposed in terms of the applicable by-laws are payable at the court on weekdays between 8am and 3pm.
The Strand Street Concourse is currently a hive of activity with the finishing touches being put to this revamped space.
Upon completion, the public interface services along the concourse will include two municipal courts, ATMs, a centre management office, a camera surveillance room and refurbished public ablution facilities. In addition, office space is being fitted to accommodate the City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development; and Enterprise and Investment Departments.
These offices will operate during normal working hours (8am - 4.30pm) and the pedestrian thoroughfare will be closed from 10pm - 6am daily for security reasons.
"One of the key priorities of the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan is to become a more customer-centric organisation. Thousands of residents make their way to the city centre on a daily basis and many make use of the Strand Street Concourse as a thoroughfare. It therefore makes perfect sense to have municipal services available within easy reach, thus taking services closer to our residents. I am sure that once the revamp has been completed, the pedestrians will be back in their numbers to make use of this public space again which will be a lot more comfortable than it was before," said Councillor Diamond.
The concourse was officially opened as a pedestrian thoroughfare in August last year after a major refit.
