Thumtom to change the face of advertising

The Thumbtom Android App for smartphones is reportedly South Africa's first app that actually pays users for viewing ads.

The user accrues a currency called 'Tom' each time they swipe their lockscreen to earn rewards, whilst the advertisers are guaranteed that their target market is interacting with their ad and possibly giving them priceless insider information.

"For the advertisers in the market, Thumbtom provides a new and unique platform and the opportunity to be the first adapters and innovators to smartphone users," Grant Reynolds, Thumbtom's Managing Director, said.

Transformed into a mobile billboard

Thumbtom offers the first full screen ad display that will change the face of advertising. At rest, each smartphone transforms to become a mobile billboard. Consumers can be presented with powerful images that ultimately drive sales. Unlike previous web-based approaches, advertisers are guaranteed an audience as the advertisement appears on the lockscreen prior to the user unlocking their phone.

Once the phone is in use, the consumer can swipe to explore the advertisement on display, swipe to invite friends, swipe to share promotions, swipe to tell the app more about themselves or swipe to answer polls and surveys.

Inherent in the Thumbtom app are user targeting and location enhancement. Instead of merely getting an advertisement seen by a target market, advertisers can use the Thumbtom research function to question their consumers, for example, 'swipe left if you want A, or right if you want B.'

However, gone are the days of click-based marketing campaigns. The swipe function allows up to 10 different marketing actions including 'swipe to get directions'; 'swipe to dial'; and 'swipe to buy'. This takes consumers straight from the initial billboard ad to the desired page where sales can be made. No 'lost' consumers, no revisiting necessary.
