IPID probe finds no grounds to prosecute Phiyega

PRETORIA: An investigation into National Police Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, has found no reasonable prospects to prosecute her.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigated a complaint against General Phiyega of defeating the ends of justice.

The executive director of IPID referred the docket to the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Mxolisi Nxasana, on completion of the investigation, with a request for a decision to be made as required in terms of section 7(4) of the IPID Act, Act 1 of 2011.

"The NDPP referred the docket to the Director of Public Prosecutions, in the Western Cape, Advocate Rodney de Kock, to make a decision. Advocate De Kock has satisfied himself that the IPID investigation is complete.

"After duly considering the statements and evidence in the docket and in light of all the circumstances, the DPP has declined to prosecute," said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Nathi Mncube.

In October 2013, the IPID said it would probe claims that Phiyega tipped off Western Cape Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arno Lamoer, about an investigation against him by crime intelligence.
