New delay likely in the arms probe

Another possible postponement of the arms deal commission looms, with the Defence Department expected to raise issues about the process of declassifying documents.

The commission stood down for two weeks to allow for this process to take place but defence spokesman Siphiwe Dlamini was evasive when asked if the process had indeed been completed.

"We are appearing there. There is no doubt. Whatever we need to raise we will raise it there," Dlamini said.

Judge Willie Seriti will have to deal with a daunting task should a request for the postponement be made, as granting it will be detrimental to the already dented integrity of the commission.

It has had to deal with internal ructions that led to resignations and claims of a second agenda by former commissioner Judge Francis Legodi and researcher Kate Painting.

Declining the postponement could mean that the commission must find other ways of working around the evidence of witnesses.

When granting the request for a postponement last week, Seriti said it would avert a situation where some testimony would be heard behind closed doors.

It remains unclear just what issues of declassification had not been resolved, two years after President Jacob Zuma established the commission to investigate allegations of fraud and corruption into the R70bn procurement of arms over a decade ago.

Commission spokesman William Baloyi said it was "all systems go" and that consultations had gone on for two weeks to resolve hurdles. But, he would not be drawn to comment on whether or not the other side had finalised its work.
