According to Foster Mohale of the Parliamentary Communication Services, the purpose of the visit is to assess the progress made since the official re-opening of the second phase of land claims lodgement process.

He said the first stop of the oversight would be Mowbray Land Claims Lodgement Site, outside Cape Town, on Wednesday. Mohale said the visit would afford members of the committee an opportunity to assess the government's implementation plans, capacity, and turnaround time to administer the claims.

The Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Act provides for the re-opening of the lodgement of land claims by those who missed the 31 December 1998 deadline to lodge land claims over a period of five years, from 30 June 2014 to 30 June 2019.

The first period for lodgement was opened between 1994 and 1998. Although land claims were made and settled, a great number of people complained that they had not been aware of the process at the time and as such they had missed the initial lodgement window.
