According to Ken Maggs, the COO of the anti-rhino poaching unit, Kay was in the KNP to help with aerial patrols when he met his untimely death. "We have lost a valuable and dynamic gallant individual, an inspiration to all who came into contact with him, may his soul rest in peace," concluded Maggs.
Dr David Mabunda, SANParks CEO, described the late Laurie Kay as a remarkable gentle giant in the aviation industry. "We were blessed by his humility, patriotism and most of all his willingness to share his immense aviation experience with some of our pilots. Our sincere condolences to his family, friends and associates, his contribution to this country will never be forgotten," said Mabunda.
Laurie Kay will best be remembered for piloting an SAA Jumbo over Ellis Park during the 1996 Rugby World Cup finals. He was also a mentor to many young pilots who are now active in the aviation industry.
