SABC celebrates 'Decade of the Artisan Programme'

SABC Education in support of the 'Decade of the Artisan Programme' launched by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), has published a book entitled Artisanship, the path to greatness. The book introduces South African learners and unemployed youths to post-school training options available to them other than the university route. South Africa needs artisans to compete globally.

The book, developed by Edzai Zvobwo and co-authors Samantha Nyikadzino and Thembeka Xipu on behalf of SABC Education emphasises the advantages of being a qualified artisan.

The book encourages girls to take up the challenge and soar high as artisans; gone are the days when artisan career paths were reserved for a few selected men.

The cover of the book is designed by Okuhle Mciteka, a Grade 12 learner at Midrand High School. She designed the cover as part of the Girl Child Rise Up in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition hosted by Maths Genius Leadership Institute (MGLI). The competition required learners to discuss girl child empowerment through pursuing STEM subjects and careers.

In designing the cover Okuhle explained that the artwork describes the general stereotype that females can't do 'power' subjects like maths, science and biology. She wanted to show people that males and females are equal, hence the equal sign. The warm fire colours represent African warmth and one of the sources of life. The gears incorporate the idea of science, technology and its applications especially in artisanship.

The Honourable Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mduduzi Manana said "It is cool to be an artisan"; SABC Education is on a mission to increase the attractiveness of artisanship among the youth and share opportunities and benefits of being a qualified artisan.

The Decade of the Artisan programme is spearheaded by the DHET for poverty alleviation in South Africa through provision of skills to the youth and unemployed so that they can play a pivotal role in the country's economy.

This is in line with the National Development Plan which is aligned to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Expansion of sustainable job opportunities for South African school leavers and unemployed citizens is at the fore-front of government's priorities thus every institution in the country has to play its part in contributing to this economic development programme.
