Yonwaba Madikizela, Kate Leistre, Hassinah Mohammed and Candice Gunn left last week excited at being chosen and looking forward to applying what they will learn on the trip to their studies.
This is the first time the third-year students have travelled overseas.
The students will spend two weeks at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, after which they will visit St Cloud State University for an equal amount of time as part of a formal exchange agreement.
A nursing science department staff member will accompany the students on the journey, during which the four girls will attend nursing classes, visit hospitals and experience a new cultural environment.
Tohiera Moodien, of the university's office for international education, said: "The programme benefits all the students involved as they learn about similarities and differences within their field.
"It is wonderful for the students to learn how things are done on the other side of the world so they can apply it to their studies."
The average cost was R40,000 each, she said.
"The students are sponsored by the international office and the nursing department. Their visas alone cost about R3,500," Moodien said.
Saint John's students have studied at NMMU's forerunner "University of Port Elizabeth" since 1998. The nursing departments at both institutions had their own semester-long exchange programme that ran from 2001 to 2007.
