PRETORIA: The North West Department of Local Government and Human Settlements has called on housing developers and contractors to register their projects with the National Home Builders' Registration Council (NHBRC).

The move, the department says, is aimed at preventing poor workmanship.

Addressing a roundtable discussion on Friday, 24 October, MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements Collen Maine urged contractors to register with the council to help the provincial government eradicate the housing backlog.

The NHBRC, a regulator body of the home building industry developers, is on a nationwide campaign to engage its stakeholders on their rights and responsibilities, and to listen to their concerns.

"The primary goal of NHBRC is to assist and protect housing consumers, who have been exposed to contractors who deliver housing units of substandard design, workmanship and poor quality material.

"No matter the size or value of your home building project, the NHBRC is here to protect both the developer and the housing consumer," said Maine.

The MEC said the council will not destroy developers' projects but will help companies to grow as homebuilders will be trained.

"It is there to ensure that there is compliance as far as registration and enrolment of projects is concerned," said Maine.

He told developers that companies and projects that are not registered with the NHBRC will not be recognised.

The NHBRC has recently opened an office in Mahikeng.
