In this week's #RideRoundup, we take a look at the new VW Tiguan Allspace as well as the new Audi A6 Avant.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace

#RideRoundup: New VW Tiguan Allspace, new Audi A6 Avant

According to Volkswagen, the new Tiguan Allspace closes the gap between the compact Tiguan and the premium class Touareg.

215 mm additional external length creates capacity for a standard third row of seats, which turns the longer wheelbase Tiguan into a seven-seater.

The wheelbase is 110mm longer, and now measures 2,791mm. This allows the vehicle to offer an extra 60mm of knee room for rear passengers and an additional 115 litres of boot space.

The new Allspace can be used in many varied ways. There's a 230-litre boot behind the third row. Fold the third row seats flat and the boot space increases to 700 litres, fold the second row flat and you have 1,775 litres of boot space. The cargo space length is then 1,921mm - enough space even for surfboards.

The Tiguan Allspace is available in three trim lines - Trendline (1.4 TSI 110 kW engine), Comfortline (2.0 TSI 132kW 4MOTION or 2.0 TDI 110kW 4MOTION variation) and Highline (2.0 TSI 162 kW engine with 4MOTION). It is also available in on-road and off-road versions.

Audi A6 Avant

#RideRoundup: New VW Tiguan Allspace, new Audi A6 Avant

The new Audi A6 Avant not only boasts a 1,680-litre maximum boot capacity but also takes on board standard mild hybrid drive, a wealth of new technology including the fully digital MMI touch response operating system, and a broad spread of state-of-the-art driver assistance options.

The new Audi A6 Avant is 4.94 metres long, 1.89 metres wide and 1.47 metres high, and Audi claims the front and rear elbow room and rear knee room are best in class.

The car offers a loading width of 1,050 millimetres and a capacity of 565 litres in five-seat mode, increasing to 1,680 litres with the standard 40:20:40 backrests folded down. The tailgate and the luggage compartment cover open electrically as standard, and an optional sensor is available for the tailgate which enables it to be opened using a simple movement of the foot.

The four and six-cylinder TDI and TFSI engines powering the new Audi A6 Avant are all are supported by Audi mild hybrid technology (MHEV) based around a belt alternator starter which recovers energy during braking that is harvested by a separate lithium-ion battery and also enables engine-off coasting at speeds of between 55km/h and 160km/h to conserve fuel.

All versions will be equipped with either seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch or eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmissions, and quattro all-wheel-drive will be a standard or optional feature depending on the model. The sport differential that actively distributes power between the rear wheels when cornering at speed will also be available.

It is reportedly unlikely that the new Audi A6 Avant will be available in South Africa.
