The Yellow Pages SA Senior Championships and SA Combined Events Championships takes place in the Indian Ocean city of Port Elizabeth this Friday and Saturday, 13th and 14th of April at the Xerox NMMU Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay.
In order to take on the best in the world, you need to be the best in your country and this showpiece event in the domestic calendar will give local athletes another opportunity to post the required qualifying grade. The athletes will be hopeful that the weather conditions prove favourable as the wind could be a vital factor come the weekend.
At the SA Inter-Club in Pretoria last Thursday evening, SA 400m record holder LJ van Zyl became the latest South African to make the grade coming home in the 400m hurdles in a time of 49.42 (under the required Olympic standard of 49.50). Van Zyl ran a 48.80 at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea last year and has therefore qualified for the Olympic Games.
LJ van Zyl joins Simon Magakwe, Tsholofelo Thipe, Thuso Mpuang and Lebogang Moeng in laying a claim to the Yellow Pages Pot of Gold incentive of R200 000 that will be shared by athletes who post Olympic A standard qualifying performances during the 2012 Yellow Pages Series sponsored-events.
Port Elizabeth will welcome a stellar cast of local athletes who will be going all out to impress and prove themselves as South Africa's best in their respective fields. In addition to the athletes who have already excelled this season, big things are expected from Caster Semenya, Mapaseka Makhanya, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Ruben Ramolefi, Khotso Mokoena and Sunette Viljoen.
"Yellow Pages has been delighted with the commitment that our athletes have shown through the season so far and are excited as we head into the pinnacle event of the season, the SA Senior Championships," said Zwelakhe Ndlovu, Yellow Pages Sponsorship Manager.
"We have seen some truly memorable performances over the course of the last few months and are confident that some of our country's best known athletes will come to the fore and prove their mettle in Port Elizabeth. We wish them, and all the athletes who will be competing, the best of luck for this coming weekend."
The curtain will finally come down on the 2012 Yellow Pages track and field season when the Yellow Pages Series 3 takes place in Tshwane on Friday, 20th April.
