De Wildt Wild Dog conservation project highlighted for Heritage Day
Issued by: Kaelo Worldwide Media

On Monday 22nd September at 18h00, SABC 2 series Kaelo - Stories of Hope will be highlighting the unfolding story of conservation efforts of the second most endangered species in the world, the wild dog. With Heritage Day celebrated on September 24th, this is an opportunity to learn more about this special project which is working to conserve South Africa's natural heritage.

Sasol has sponsored the research and implementation of the De Wildt Wild Dog Project with the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust as part of their Corporate Social Investment initiatives. The mission of the project is to ensure long term survival of the wild dog in its natural environment. Kaelo - Stories of Hope investigates the time and effort that has been put into fighting against this predator's extinction

Through Sasol's continued support, De Wildt has become a rich source of research projects. This is evident in the long list of more than 80 specialist publications that have emanated from the various projects aimed at conserving wildlife, more specifically, the wild dog species. “At Sasol, we realise the importance of conserving wildlife and the environment as part of our legacy to future generations. Supporting the vital work of De Wildt in ensuring the survival of the wild dog is one of the many ways we try to preserve that legacy,” says Pamilla Mudhray, Head of Corporate Social Investment at Sasol.

Ann van Dyk, managing director and founder of the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust, is very happy with the growth and success of the project. “De Wildt holds a number of diverse genetic lines and the value of these in terms of restocking areas where populations are either decimated or require new blood is invaluable. De Wildt has been responsible for many successful releases of wild dogs into the wild around South Africa and even Namibia. We still have a long way to go but we are very proud of the work we have done to date.”

De Wildt receives approximately 20 000 visitors per annum. These visitors have often never seen and never will see wild dogs in the wild. “Visitors have had the opportunity to view and become aware of wild dogs as a species here for over twenty years. A place like De Wildt has a huge educational impact,” says van Dyk.

The Trust has an extensive community outreach and education programme and a strategic breeding plan. It conducts research on wildlife disease and nutrition and in South Africa it has implemented a national programme for the conservation of free roaming cheetah. De Wildt is the only captive breeding centre in the world with a positive cheetah population growth.

Watch Kaelo - Stories of Hope on Monday 22nd September to learn more about projects that are uplifting our communities and preserving our heritage.

“Kaelo - Stories of Hope highlights unsung heroes, even our non-human friends, and shows what can be achieved when companies, communities and individuals work together for a brighter future,'' says Sandile Koza, Managing Director of Kaelo Worldwide Media. “The Kaelo campaign demonstrates real success through engaging viewers and encouraging action and partnerships, even instigating further funding and support for projects as a result of the knowledge and awareness people gain from seeing the stories. We believe that everyone has a role to play in driving our heritage and positive change in this country, and we hope the stories inspire people to make a difference. Don't miss it.”
