Furry friend franchise takes off in SA

Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc, an interactive retailer of customised stuffed animals, recently announced South Africa as a new international franchisee.

“We are eager to introduce our brand in South Africa,” says Maxine Clark, who heads the company. “South Africa is just the right market for Build-A-Bear Workshop and we are fortunate to be working with our highly experienced and passionate franchisee partners Intencity Entertainment (Pty) Ltd and, with their national plan of twenty stores in the next five years, we look forward to becoming part of the South African family!”

Ivor Ichikowitz, Chairman of Intencity Entertainment (Pty) Ltd, says, "Build-A-Bear Workshop is a business model that inspires me. I'm very excited to be a part of this global phenomenon and look forward to each new store opening as we expand around the country.”

To date, four sites have been chosen in Gauteng and are set to bring the brand, product and store experience to the South African market in 2007. In 2008 franchises will also open in Durban and Cape Town. Sites for these are in the process of final selection.

Following the brand ideals globally, the franchise plans to get actively involved from a CSI point of view in all aspects of children, animals and communities in need. Store launches will be no exception, including guests from all walks of life within these communities, ensuring that all South Africans get to experience the magic of creating a memory and a new, furry friend.

To date, 50 million furry friends have been sold internationally, with franchises open in eight countries.

Ichikowitz adds, “Build-A-Bear Workshop is a concept that I believe all South Africans will love! Teddy bears are such an amazing symbol of love, hope and happiness and I can't wait for South Africans to participate in the happy, fun and exciting experience that Build-A-Bear Workshop has become worldwide."

The franchise claims to be a unique approach to the entertainment retail industry. The teddy bear theme is carried throughout the store with original teddy bear fixtures, murals and artwork. Regardless of age, guests enjoy the highly visual environment, the sounds and the fantasy of this special place while they create a memory with their friends and family. The store associates, known as Bear Builder™ associates, share the experience with Guests at each phase of the bear-making process.

Each associate will undergo extensive training and development from experienced franchise associates.
