US designer to grace Africa Fashion Week

There is hope for local fashion lovers who have been salivating over the sinfully sexy purple catsuit worn by Alicia Keys in her latest video.

Next month, American LaQuan Smith, who designed Keys' outfit, will be in Johannesburg to showcase his work during the Africa Fashion Week, from 30 June - 3 July 2010 at Sandton Convention Centre.

Now in its second year, the fashion event will host 28 designers. Local names include David Tlale, Stoned Cherrie and Thula Sindi.

Smith, who spoke to The Times from the US, has already managed to snip a name for himself in the highly competitive world of dressing celebrities. At only 21, he has dressed big names such as Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

"I've always had a passion for sewing and making clothes and now I am dressing the 'IT' girls. I have worked with so many people, like I dressed Rihanna in her Rubeboy music video in that gold little number she wears and have also worked with Toni Braxton and model Tyra Banks," he said.

After finishing high school and being rejected by Fashion Institute of Technology twice, Smith decided to break into fashion.

He got his foot in the door by scoring an internship with BlackBook magazine.

"I'm so excited to be coming to Africa as it will be my first time ever and I promise to bring some fashion forward, young and exciting outfits that will wow the audiences.

"I will also be bringing my LQS range that I will be selling at affordable prices. It's young, girly, fun new stuff that I'm sure most people will love," he said.
