Bafana Bafana ready for the Confed?

This past Saturday surprisingly saw Bafana Bafana beat Poland 1-0. I say “surprisingly”, even though I am a true patriot to my country, because we're not yet up to scratch with the rest of the world when it comes to football. Though at least with this latest win it's a step in the right direction.
I started watching the game with not that much confidence in the Bafana boys; for the first ten minutes I wasn't expecting a good performance, though as I saw our team's nerves settle so did mine. I didn't have to shout at the top of my lungs “pass the ball!” They were knocking the ball around themselves and with ease I might add. I told one of my mates sitting next to me “Finally we're playing soccer”. Who would've of thought, it doesn't take a world cup winning coach like Carlos Alberto Parreria, who wants thirty million rand a year to build a good team. I'm impressed with current coach Joel Santana even if he has an interpreter for a pet. He's building a team with what he has and if “we” (those who criticise our national teams) just at least support him and other sporting codes coaches, this will help take some of the pressure off the team.

Bafana has given themselves and myself a major boost of confidence in their abilities with their win this past weekend and the timing couldn't be better what with the looming Confederations Cup taking place in just six days time. Not to mention next year's FIFA World Cup, undoubtedly the biggest football tournament in the world which will be played right in our own “backyard”.

It's safe to assume that not just our local media but international media as well will be in doubt about our team's performance, brining up past matches from ten years ago that has no relevance to how our team is playing now. This is where it becomes crunch time for Bafana, this is where we can show the world that we can perform on their level. Hopefully I don't get to eat my words later but like I said I am a patriot.
