The mascot, named Takuma, was introduced to the media in October, during the Afcon final draw. Takuma will be used in future departmental campaigns and will serve as a tool to promote good sportsmanship.

On Tuesday Tumelo, aged 13, a grade seven pupil at Dikgorwaneng Primary School in Hammanskraal, was awarded prizes by the Department of Sport and Recreation for his winning mascot. He has won football and netball equipment for his school, a school uniform voucher worth R1,000 as well as an art set - so he can continue drawing. Tumelo's grandparents were given grocery vouchers and VIP tickets for the opening Afcon match in January.

Tumelo told SAnews that he was not surprised he won the competition as he had faith in his drawing ability."Now that I've won this art set, it will help me improve my drawing skills. I will also enter more competitions in the future," he said. Tumelo's grandmother, Jane Nkoane, 63, who's been taking care of him since his mother passed away in 2006, told the GCIS that at the time of the competition, she was not aware what was happening until she was told that Tumelo's mascot had won.
