“Cru Café” to launch at Cape Quarter extension

Capetonians and visitors to the Mother City will soon have a great new funky address to meet for a casual meal and sample an extensive selection of wines favouring South Africa but also offering some great international options. Opening in mid-October 2009 at the new Cape Quarter Extension in trendy Green Point, Cru Café is set to be the new meeting and wine-quaffing place of choice.
The term ‘Cru' refers to a vineyard recognised as of superior quality and hence the name Cru Café was born as it reflects a philosophy where patrons can experience a special destination where the dining experience as a whole is of a superior and consistent quality.

Brothers Tom and Jacques Castelein are the formidable duo behind the Cru Café concept and are handsomely backed by Cape Wine Master Elsie Pells who brings extensive wine knowledge to the business. Tom and Jacques previously owned the successful Tasca de Belem restaurant located in the V&A Waterfront, which was sold in April 2008. Elsie is an international wine judge and lecturer, working as far afield as Australia and the Czech Republic. The team combines a passion for great food and wine smartly backed up with international knowledge and experience.

The wine list is a jaw-dropping adventure of some one-hundred and twenty (120) choices and expertly listed to avoid pretension and aloofness so often found on restaurant wine lists. From an impressive array of Champagnes, Method Cap Classique wines to quirkily titled segments such as ‘Perfumed Partners', ‘Reds with Attitude' and ‘Sweet and Sticky' - there's a wine for every day and any occasion.

A clever addition to the Cru Café concept is the availability to experience ‘wine flights' where one can choose a preferred varietal and receive three tasters served with an appropriate appetiser. It's a fun and interactive way to sample wines without leaving the city!

A wine shop completes the experience and will offer wines not only found on the wine list and will also offer rare and sought-after vintages.

Chef Wesley Petterson who has gained experience in the kitchens of The Olympia Café & Deli, the Vineyard Hotel & Spa and most recently at the Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa has created along with the Castelein brothers a delicious cosmopolitan-style menu that will please all tastes. Dishes include a ‘Country Terrine' (R48) for Starters, a salad selection including ‘The Nouveau Caesar Salad' (54), a ‘Signature Ratatouille on Polenta' (69) for Mains, a selection of cheese flights (from R55) and a simple offering of favourite desserts including ‘Chocolate Mousse' (35).
