Based on the 'Pimp your ride' reality TV concept, a new competition for small business owners has been launched under the title of 'Punk Your SME!' The competition will invite South African small business owners to motivate why their business deserves to be 'punked' and receive a shot in the arm to raise their profile.
The competition is organised by financial journalist and entrepreneur Marc Ashton and supported by marketer and author Scott Cundill from Majestic Interactive.
Every three months, the team will give away advertising, marketing material and technology to make small businesses run better as well as a round table mentoring and strategy session with top South African entrepreneurs to provide suggestions for scaling the business up.
"Locally there has been a lot of focus on start-ups - particularly in the technology sector - but start-ups are initially low impact employing a handful of skilled people and have very high failure rates," says Ashton.
"What about the businesses that have already done the legwork, made their mistakes and are now looking to scale up? That is where a competition like this comes in.
The competition also provides an opportunity for the organisers to collect data toward their Entrepreneur Confidence Index, which will provide relevant information on entrepreneurial activity in South Africa as well as try to identify pains that the small business sector may be experiencing.
Competitors, sponsors wanted
Entrepreneurs who want to enter the competition can send an e-mail to Ashton with the subject line "I Want To Punk My SME" or join the "Punk Your SME" Facebook group to be kept up to date with industry happenings.
One of the key strategies for the organisers is to leverage the 'social lending' spirit, which is becoming increasingly prominent in South Africa. Those looking to contribute skills, services, mentoring, products or make cash donations which can be put toward each quarters' prize can contact Marc Ashton on +27 (0)82-561-1585 or e-mail .
I certainly wouldn't like my business to be Punk'd! Getting Pimp my Ride (take something shit and make it better) confused with getting Punk'd (Ashton Kucher pulling the piss out of somebody) is not altogether well conceived! Posted on 9 Jul 2010 13:55
Hi Andrew. One of the definitions of "Punk" is 'the defiance of social norms of behavior' - which I think sums up entrepreneurs pretty squarely.
A US rock journalist wrote this quote in an education essay which I think is really fitting:
"Punk to me was a form of free speech. It was a moment when suddenly all kinds of strange voices that no reasonable person could ever have expected to hear in public were being heard all over the place."
Again I thought its a pretty apt quote for SA entrepreneurs trying to find a voice. Posted on 10 Jul 2010 21:06
Punk in terms of fashion and music was one of the most creative movements especially of its time. The people broke norms and created a new feeling that transcended much of what was around.Punk embraced everything that society was at the time and shone a light on what people tried to avoid. What society needs at the moment is a new wave of optimism, expression and originality.
