Members of The Soweto Canoe And Recreation Club (SCARC) will showcase their love of canoeing on Valentines Day. In Pietermaritzburg they will kickstart a challenge that started all the way from humble beginnings in Soweto.
Since 2003, SCARC has become a powerful platform that teaches underprivileged Soweto kids how to swim, participate in water sports, develop crucial life skills and become economically active. The initiative was started by ADreach, who continues to enthusiastically sponsor the team.
Founder of SCARC and ADreach CEO, Brad Fisher says, "What started 10 years ago as a challenging dream has become a succession of major milestones reached. I'm deeply proud of the team behind SCARC".
Cyril Ramaphosa, patron of SCARC summed up the spirit behind the club; "The SCARC team is an impressive group. They are young people who have seized an opportunity to rise above their circumstances. We support them wholeheartedly in their efforts." "We're ready to take on the best and surpass all the goals we've already achieved. Just being able to challenge is already a victory but we'll definitely be aiming for trophies", says Nkosi Mzolo, Chairman of SCARC.
Former Boxing World Champ, Baby Jake Matlala, who participated in the team's weekly time trial, also wished the team well as he witnessed their focus and dedication first hand. Baby Jake had a great talk at the club afterwards about becoming the shortest World Champ ever. He spoke about being a top sportsman and the importance of being a good role model while balancing study with a sporting career. He inspired not just the kids but also the entire club.
Roshney Ramdin, HR Manager at ADreach was another enthusiastic well-wisher; "We believe in the team. Based on past success at the Dusi with Nkosi Mzolo and his team we know Thulani Mike Mbanjwa and Siseko Ntondini have what it takes to go the distance".
The Dusi takes place between 14 and 16 February. It starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Durban.
