HDI goes pink for breast cancer awareness this October

As part of the continuous commitment towards breast cancer awareness, staff members at HDI Youth Marketeers joined the pink movement this Women's Month to promote the cause.
The Pick n Pay Women's Walk is a series of nationwide 5km walks to raise funds to support free cancer screening and health advice in local communities.

The series which was launched in October 2011 and raises funds towards the Pink Drive, painted Gauteng pink in October, with HDI following the trail closely.

The team participated in the Gauteng leg of the walks which took place in Soweto at Soccer City and at LC De Villiers Sports Grounds in Pretoria on 20 and 27 October 2012 respectively.

10 November sees the Women's Walk series taking place in Bloemfontein and opens 2013 up with a stop off in Port Elizabeth on 26 January.

HDI employees pledged participation to help raise awareness about the importance of breast health as well as regular screening.

The youth marketing specialists run the series of walks for Pick n Pay, and this year challenged all members of the team to take part.

Globally, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer amongst women in both the developed and developing world. In 2010 alone, more than 1.5 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer with an estimated 10.9% of the world's total female population affected. Locally, one in 29 South African women is impacted with an estimated 3000 dying from the disease each year.

MD of HDI Youth Marketeers Jason Levin's view: "Because we're a company focused on youth, we connect a lot with Moms, so breast cancer would probably be on the radar for us, anyway. But one of our senior team is a breast cancer survivor, so it's something particularly close to our hearts."

Hearing a breast cancer diagnosis can be one of the most frightening realities for most people. A physical, emotional, and psychological challenge, though as thousands of survivors can testify, there is now greater understanding of the condition and more ways of fighting it than ever before.
