Local township boys have proven that that it doesn't matter where you come from as much as where you want to go.
Brad Fisher, CEO of ADreach, together with the members of the BAM/SCARC racing team
The Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club with the help of BAM, the activations and augmented reality specialists, have recently formed a canoe racing team ("the BAM Soweto Racing Team") to compete against established teams, and this collaboration once again proved what a difference corporate sponsorship can make in the lives of disadvantaged youths.
The team is led by Mike Mbanjwa, the iconic first black paddler to finish the Dusi Marathon in a winning boat - and their results have already impressed. The team recently took on cold windy conditions in the 230km Berg River Challenge, that starts in Paarl, and is undisputedly the toughest canoe race in South Africa.
Mike Mbanjwa finished 9th overall, Siseko Ntondini finished 15th overall and 2nd in the U21 category. S'fiso Cebekhulu finished 25th overall and 3rd in the Junior category. Brad Fisher finished 28th overall and 2nd in the Sub Master category.
The Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club was established over eight years ago by Brad Fisher, CEO of Adreach. It began with a vision of using water sports as the medium to engage with and provide development opportunities for underprivileged children in Soweto.
"Seven years ago these kids couldn't even swim - let alone canoe down a river. Today they are competing against the best paddlers in the country - and doing extremely well. The opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of these talented young individuals is one we deeply cherish. SCARC is more than just a sports club or a swimming programme. It is a powerful platform that enables us to touch and change the local community and discover the enormous talent that remains untapped within the Soweto community. Adreach is proud to be a part of it", says Brad Fisher.
BAM, a subsidiary of ADreach, therefore leaped on the opportunity to sponsor the SCARC racing team and carry the momentum even further forward.
