The Award which is endorsed by The Dept of Environmental Affairs, is sponsored jointly by Hasselblad Cameras and Ms Xiaoyang Yu, Founding Partner of China New Enterprise Investment (CNEI), a China focused growth capital fund with the aim to increase capture and prosecution of poachers and to cut demand for rhino horn.

Dr Larry Hansen, Chairman and CEO of Hasselblad Cameras, emphasised in his address that these awards are about the people, to recognise the individuals who work tirelessly to combat rhino poaching. Categories for the awards are Conservation Practitioner; Judicial System and Policing; Media and Journalism;NGO and Technology Invention.

The event, held in Pretoria recently was attended by a cross section of people in the conservation, media and judicial areas including the Minister Edna Mnolewa, Minister of Water & Environmental Affairs, Mr Fundisile Mketeni, DDG of Environmental Affairs: Biodiversity & Conservation.

In her Keynote address, Minister Mnolewa welcomed the iniatives taken by all stakeholders to partner and support government in fighting this scourge, acknowledging that government alone cannot overcome this threat to conservation. She added that this is recognised as an organised crime and requires the involvement of all South Africans to win the war against poaching.

Dr Ian Player, the environmental educator and life-long conservationist, who is Patron of the GRAA could not attend due to ill health, but sent his wishes in a letter which was read out by Chris Calliers, Chairman of GRAA. Dr Player thanked the recipients of the Awards not only from all South Africans, but also international conservation organisations. "We in the GRAA are deeply grateful for the determination of the recipients to ensure that the killings and barbarous mutilations, unprecedented since the 19th century, are being brought to everyone's attention, he wrote. 'Thank God, it is heart-warming to see the large cross section of nominees who range from game rangers to police officers, advocates, broadcasters, conservation organisations, journalists and most encouraging an eight year old girl, who have succeeded in bringing this terrible carnage to the attention of the world" said Dr Player.

Dr Hansen and The GRAA were delighted with the number and quality of nominations received for this inaugural event, proving Dr Hansen's belief that it is critically important to recognize the people who are involved in rhino conservation.

Winners of the awards were Don English, Regional Ranger, Marula South Region, KNP; Adv Antoinette Ferreira, Snr State Advocate NPA Free State; Miss Jenny Griesel, Marketing Manager of Jacaranda FM; Elise Daffue, Founder of www.stoprhinopoaching.com and Dr Cindy Harper, Geneticist Onderstpoort Veterinary Genetics Laboratory.
