“An overseas production usually imports its key cast, leaving very few meaty roles for local actors,” agrees Colin. “Louise and I were seriously lucky to get supporting lead roles in a film with a mostly international cast. It has been a great work experience.”
The storyline follows the British production crew of a survival reality show. Billy Zane stars as Sebastian ‘Seb' Beazley, a Bear Grylls type character, with Colin Moss in the role of the jaded British cameraman, Dexter Simms. They arrive on an unexplored and uninhabited island in the Philippines, to film a new series, but soon discover that they are not alone. The crew, led by Rachel (Louise Barnes) are planning to shoot ‘Seb' Beazley's survival techniques, when they encounter a bloody massacre and the terrifying mythological creatures, Aswang.
“The Aswang exist in Filipino folklore, rather like the Tokoloshe in South African folklore,” said Colin. “This lends a certain reality anchor to the film. I think horror fans will like it.”
In the online magazine,
Media Update, Billy Zane said he enjoyed working with Colin, describing him as “dedicated and an immensely talented and wonderful actor.”
Surviving Evil was shot in Durban and the North and South Coasts of KZN, which gave Colin the opportunity to introduce the international cast to Durban curry, a production highlight, from all accounts!
On the experience of working with an international cast, Colin says, “They were a pretty down-to-earth bunch of people and we had a lot of fun together in Durban. It was also nice to get a sense of the Hollywood way of doing things. There are a few differences one notices - like, we take ourselves far too seriously in South Africa.”
Having experienced Italian (
Ex), British (
World Unseen and
Surviving Evil) and Bollywood (
Season's Greetings) movie productions in the past year, is Colin taking himself seriously?
“Not particularly,” he says. “I am just happy to be part of a film that doesn't suck.”
