Prof. G. Keith Still develops and teaches a wide range of crowd risk analysis and crowd safety courses for event organisers, police, emergency planners, city authorities, building control and licensing officers. His courses have run at the UK Cabinet Office Emergency Planning College, universities and client sites around the world since 1999.
The Criminal Justice Special Interest Group in London will play host to the Fellow Member of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, while his knowledge and experience will take him to Australia, to assist in preparing for G20, The Asia Foot Ball Cup 2015 and the ICC Cricket Cup 2015. In addition to this, after the most recent accident at the SXSW Music Festival, USA, Keith has been invited by the Austin Texas City Planning Department once again to assist with City Planning after his work with the City Wide Music Festival since 2011.
Amongst this, Prof. Still will be in South Africa, a first for Africa, from the 1-3 July 2014, to host an internationally accredited conference to city officials, stadium holders, event holders including the safety and security industry.
From mass evacuation procedure in Washington DC for the USA senate to religious events such as the remodeling of the Yamarat Bridge project in Saudia Arabia, Prof. Still is the leading authority on crowd management.
With South Africa increasingly becoming a destination of choice by international events organisers and local authorities and event bodies bidding for global events, there is an urgent requirement for skills and understanding in the planning of crowd management, control and safety. Recent successes such as the 1995 Rugby World Cup, 2010 FIFA World Cup and tragedies, The Ellis Park soccer stadium disaster of 2001, have given South Africans a sense of the challenges in designing, event footprints, stadiums, public transport, crowd models and controlling crowd behavior, and so far those challenges have been met.
Yearly, around the world and the current highlight, The FIFA World Cup in Brazil, there are numerous crowd incidents resulting in injury and death, from small-scale events (such as nightclubs), to larger ones (such as the Love Parade disaster in Germany), needless to say with Brazil launching its biggest event in history, without all planning and infrastructure complete, we will see many further tragedies and success, the latter being an unfortunate news headline in the months to come.
As South Africa becomes more commonly used by large events, there is an increasingly greater responsibility to ensure we're at a world-class standard. South Africa is being catapulted into the lead of exponential global change, this is a unique prospect to prepare and control crowd behavior to better deal with the influx of opportunity, which will be landing on our shores. This economic growth and investment will lead to growth in infrastructure, city planning, exhibitions, conferences and world wide events targeting South Africa as a host platform.
A first for South Africa, a three-day conference, with an exclusive networking evening will be hosted in Cape Town, South Africa from 1 - 3 July 2014 with an Excellence Networking Evening on 3 July 2014.
About the conference:
This interactive conference is presented over three days by one of the leading experts worldwide, Prof. Dr. G. Keith Still (an expert witness at news-making events such as nightclub overcrowding (Hillsborough Disaster UK), and personal injuries at rock concerts, (Rage against the Machine); the mass evacuation of the United States senate; and an advisor to the London, Beijing and Sydney Olympics, The Commonwealth Games, the royal wedding of 2011 and mass religious festivals in Saudi Arabia, to name a few).
Over the three-day workshop, Prof. Still will present the history and classification of crowd incidents, accident causation, explain crowd modeling, crowd behavior and how to influence both, risk analysis and safety.
As an added bonus, delegates are invited to take their event plans to the workshop on day three where Prof. Still will demonstrate the principles and applications of crowd risk analysis and review key site and event issues. Topics include how to avoid overcrowding in public space, how to anticipate and avoid accidents and incidents, the fundamental causes and prevention of crowd related disasters and how to develop robust crowd management plans.
The following typical delegates include; Site or venue operational managers, stewarding and security organisations, police officers, architects, local authorities officers with licensing, planning or leisure management responsibilities.
