An accolade to South Africa's musical calendar, The 14th Sekunjalo Edujazz Concert brings us another fantastic night of jazz music. The concert, which takes place at The Artscape Theatre on Saturday 14 June 2014 at 7.30pm, brings together a culmination of school jazz bands mentored under some of the Western Cape's most talented educators. This year the line-up features Ifidyoli String Project, UWC Wind Jazz Orchestra and special guest Jimmy Nevis. As in the past, the proceeds provide educational bursaries for disadvantaged students and promote the rich culture of jazz music amongst our youth.
This concert raises funds for educational bursaries which unifies disadvantaged youth and provides a platform for inspiration and hope. Over 75 schools benefit annually from this exciting musical project. Workshops are held throughout the year in various schools and platforms and the product of these workshops is The Sekunjalo Edujazz Concert.
The project allows young students to express their creative talent and to perform with well-known South African musicians on international stages.
The Beau Soleil Ifidyoli Strings Project commenced in 1999 by Kathleen Garrity to meet the growing need for instrumental tuition in previously disadvantaged communities. This project takes place on Saturday mornings and has grown into a vibrant ensemble with many students crossing over into Beau Soleil Music Centre's main programme.
The UWC Wind Jazz Orchestra is an exciting feature on this year's calendar. It is one of the programmes offered at the UWC Centre of Performing Arts. This orchestra was established in March 2014 to achieve one of the centre's objectives to have an active outreach programme for students in surrounding communities. The Edujazz project has funded numerous workshops to identify students who can be a part of the centre's music programme. The youngest member of the orchestra is Daniel Petersen who is just 11 years old and was first featured at a previous Edujazz Concert in 2009.
Born and raised in Cape Town, Jimmy Nevis is a 21 year old alternative pop singer/songwriter and producer.
Signed to Cape Town record Label, Rude World Records, with a publishing, licencing and distribution deal with David Gresham Records, Jimmy Nevis released his debut album entitled "Subliminal" in November 2012.
Jimmy is currently riding high on the South African airplay with his hit singles, Elephant Shoes, Heartboxing, In Love With You and Balloon - All chart toppers on various South African radio stations, respectively. The Heartboxing Music Video had successfully reached the No. 1 spot onTrace Urban African chart earlier this year.
Nevis has been very fortunate to share the stage with some of South Africa's best musicians - getting the opportunity to work with the best in the business. In 2013 he collaborated with the likes of MiCasa and Pascal & Pearce and features on their recently released albums.
Over the past thirteen years, the Sekunjalo Edujazz Concert has seen talented music students from schools such as Steenberg High Jazz Band, Alexander Sinton High Jazz Band, Zerilda Park Primary Band from Lavender Hill and the Muizenberg High Jazz Band share the stage with jazz acts such as Jimmy Dludlu, Tucan Tucan, Virtual Jazz Reality, The Darryl Andrews Jazz Band, Vicky Sampson, Galumphing and MiCasa.
This year's concert promises to be a feast of musical talent. Audiences can also be proud in the knowledge that they have played a role in contributing to a better education for our disadvantaged youth.
