It's action-packed display time in the Rand Show arena

If it's drama and spectacle you're after, there's no better place to be than the Rand Show's main arena. Across the showgrounds, there's top-class entertainment to be had at the Rand Show 2014, and the main arena is no exception. Military displays, emergency rescues, hostage dramas, South Africa's strongest men going head to head... it's all happening in the Rand Show arena.

A show of strength

The South African Strongman Union hosts five national strongman qualifying competitions across the country, in the run-up to SA's Strongest Man 2014 competition in July. One of these qualifiers is coming live to Rand Show visitors.

The third national SA Strongman Qualifier at the Rand Show kicks off on Saturday, 26 April at 2-6pm, and continues on Sunday, 27 April from 11am to 4pm. The top three athletes at the Rand Show event will go on to compete at SA's Strongest Man 2014.

An impressive group of contestants is assembling for the Rand Show qualifier. SA's Strongest Man for 2011, Gerhard van Staden, will be competing, along with Tristan O'Brien, the 2012 winner. Six-time winner, Ettiene Smit, and three-time winner, Willie White, join Andre Sweeney and Dean Joseph Shelly, who came second and third respectively in the 2012 Strongest Man competition.

Rory Scheepers, winner of the World Strongest Man (U/105 kg) in 2009 and title hopefuls Kelin Mills and Jared Leask round off the field.

Amongst the challenges is a trio of awesome lifts that make up the Overhead Medley, and the popular Car Deadlift, where each contestant will lift the back of a car as many times as possible in 60 seconds; that's about 360kg per lift!

There will also be Keg Toss, Africa Stone Carry, the Yoke Carry of 380kg, a 450kg Tyre Flip (and not just once, but eight times per contestant), Atlas Stones (lifting 130-180kg weights to various heights), and many more well-known strength events.

Meet the SAPS

On Friday, 25 April, from 10am to 1pm, the SAPS will put on a high-impact simulation of various vehicle hijacking, kidnapping and hostage situations.

The men and women in blue will also present a display of high-speed vehicles and riot vehicles inside Hall 7. Visitors will be able to get general information about the SAPS, and will also be able to speak to Crime Line and Lead SA representatives.

Keeping Gauteng safe

On Saturday, 26 April, from 10am to 1pm, Joburg's Public Safety Department which is made up of the Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS), will show visitors how the city's first responders deal with a motor vehicle fire and how they extricate victims from a motor vehicle accident. They will also run through typical search-and-rescue scenarios, with the help of Joburg's canine unit.

From 18-28 April, visitors can also visit the Department's exhibition in Hall 7.

The JMPD will bring patrol cars and equipment from various units, including the freeway, high-speed, number plate tracing, and suburban patrol units. Visitors will be able to see the various types of speeding equipment and cameras used by the department, and uniformed officers will demonstrate breathalysers. Kids can play on a mini cycle track where they will be taught the rules of the road.

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is bringing one of its fire engines; visitors can try on the heavy fire-fighting equipment and then clamber up into the huge red fire truck. There will also be a fire simulation, showing a room damaged by fire, explaining to visitors how this sort of situation can be avoided.

Since safety is the focus, the Public Safety Department will run a twice-daily safety programme for children. Pedestrian safety and the safety of people in informal settlements, specifically related to fire, will also be a topic of discussion.

Finally, members of this department will be on hand to give visitors information on important safety bylaws, such as keeping swimming pools covered, and fire safety through fire exits and signage.

Pay your fines

Rand Show visitors to the JMPD/EMS stand in Hall 7 will be able to check whether they have outstanding traffic fines. They'll be able to view photos of speeding violations, and will then be able to pay their fines. JMPD members will answer any queries relating to fines and court appearances.

A show of national pride

Join Ronald McDonald and Rand Show performers at 1:30pm on Sunday, 27 April, and celebrate Freedom Day by releasing a thousand balloons into the air.
