International smooth jazz saxophonist and songwriter Kirk Whalum will serenade concert goers at the Liquifruit Amphitheatre in Paarl on Sunday, 30 March 2014. Fresh from performing at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Whalum and his band will bring the inaugural and successful Summer Jazz Series to a rousing close.
If any of the previous concerts are anything to go by, the assembled crowd will be up on their feet and joining in the musical entertainment with enthusiasm. The Summer Jazz Series has been the first foray into officially extending the renowned Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Organisers of both events, espAfrika, have been pleased by the support the Summer Jazz Series has garnered. Says Rashid Lombard: "Jazz as a genre is broad and all encompassing. The Summer Jazz Series, located in the outdoor arena on the outskirts of Paarl, has drawn crowds from close-by and from much farther afield. It has also encouraged families to turn out and we have seen youngsters, their teenage siblings and their parents all enjoy a good and wholesome evening's entertainment with many of the concert-goers returning to subsequent events."
Opening for the legendary Kirk Whalum will be Cape Town born and raised bass player Jonathan Rubain and his band (The Jonathan Rubain Band). The outfit will appeal equally to the younger fans and their folks as Rubain's success story is testament to the power of music overcoming humble beginnings and will make 'people happy' with a number of their well-known hits.
Adam Samie, CEO of Lion of Africa Insurance Company confirmed: "We have been impressed with the turn out and support the Summer Jazz Series (SJS) has received. As a brand we are always looking of ways to engage with our customers and reward them. The SJS provides the perfect platform to activate our people-centric philosophy as we are giving them first class entertainment consisting of local and international artists, in a beautiful setting that allows them to relax and enjoy life. We also believe this Series can grow and look forward to our future collaboration in this arena."
The Series, presented by Lion of Africa Insurance and is in association with Heart104.FM, Paarl Post and the South African Breweries.
