ABC releases Media24 audit results

8 Feb 2008 15:2512 commentsBizLike
The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) this afternoon, Friday, 8 February 2008, released three statements concerning audits on titles by Media24, New Media Publishing and 8 Ink Media, and lifted the suspension on the Media24 titles involved in last year's circulation scandal.
“A number of Media24 titles were suspended when the ABC discovered that their circulation had been fraudulently inflated,” states Charles Beiles, GM of the ABC.

“Following the conclusion of the audit requested on all Media24 titles, the suspensions have been lifted and the affected titles will be reinstated from 1 January 2008. The Board of the ABC has censured Media 24 for these fraudulent activities and is of the view that circulations were deliberately manipulated.

“The audit of all Media24 titles has revealed that there are a number of other transactions which have not been correctly reported. In particular, those involve inter group transactions which, inter alia, have breached the Code of Conduct of the ABC. This conduct is disapproved of by the Board which requires that the circulation of these titles covering the period January 2006 to March 2007 be invalidated or re-classified as follows:

PROOF AT LAST!-
Well, there you have it! Posted on 8 Feb 2008 17:02
DIPLOMATIC NICETIES CAN'T MASK THIS MISDEMEANOUR-
To all M 24 spin doctors, eat your words, there's no other way to paint fraud, scam, misappropriation, distortion as a good picture.Accept your faith, your perception in the industry is in doldrums.Throw your darts,it doesn't change anything." Vox populi vox dei". Posted on 8 Feb 2008 17:20
Vox ABC vox dei?-
I think not. Let's see how this thing pans out. Posted on 8 Feb 2008 17:37
ABC is not alleging fraud-
Read the release. This is a difference of opinion regarding the interpretation of rules. ABC does not want to allow Media24 magazines to sell mags to other companies n the Naspers group. Not entirely surprising since Naspers owns more companies than competitors on the ABC board. Posted on 9 Feb 2008 12:54
fyi-
The touchline titles are actually fine and will be contesting this as they are within the ABC parameters. Funny that Caxton person is fronting the ABC...

Fin Week could be guilty, the TLM titles solid :) Posted on 8 Feb 2008 17:32
fyi...-
Not only is Touchline solid, but so is Finweek. The problem is - this is no longer about circulation issues it is about politics. Opposition to Media24 lost court cases and are p'd off - now they want to raise issues where there are none. Posted on 8 Feb 2008 19:22
solid?-
FinWeek is definftely not "solid" as you say. The issue is not about politics, but rather about fraud, which the ABC's have proven. Selling your titles to other titles in your stable and then claiming those figures is just wrong. The ABC (agreed upon) rules do not allow for this. There are no politics involved, just wrong or right and in this case they were wrong. Don't be like a corrupt politican caught with his pants down, but stil claiming that its all a misundertsanding. Admit guilt, say you're sorry and instead of forcing your titles on to subscribers of your other publications, sell them genuinely and claim those figures. Posted on 11 Feb 2008 08:45
The flaw in your argument...-
is that the 'agreed' rules DO NOT preclude group transactions. If the ABC has a problem with these transactions they should change the rules, not penalise titles who have done nothing wrong. Posted on 11 Feb 2008 09:26
Idiot...-
Go and read the rules... once you have armed yourself with the information you need to pass comment - then do so - but until then - shut up and stop talking rubbish. Posted on 11 Feb 2008 09:57
Oh well-
So Media 24 will not admit guilt and are issuing statements saying it was a "difference of opinion between the ABC and Finweek in the interpretation of the rules"?
Oh well, make the print industry look even more corrupt then. Thanks guys. Posted on 11 Feb 2008 09:44
Farce-
The sad thing in this entire debacle is that the only two people who were dismissed over this scandal were staff that were ordered to carry out instructions from above, while everyone else resigned and walked away. Posted on 11 Feb 2008 19:16
best life-
Idiots!!!!

This magazine was only launched in June so how on earth did it even have a circ???

Incompetent ABC... Posted on 18 Feb 2008 17:07
