The City of Joburg, Standard Chartered Bank, Emergency Management Services, the Zondi Buy-Back Centre as well as community members all joined in the initiative as they cleaned-up the streets around the park.

"We are thrilled about the support we received from the community and very grateful to everyone who gave their time and energy to make this event such a success," said Zimasa Velaphi, public relations and marketing manager of Collect-a-Can.

"We believe that it is our responsibility to pro-actively minimise the impact of beverage cans and other metal packaging on the environment," Alex Bouwer, marketing manager of Nampak Bevcan commented. "We are delighted that consumers are recognising the importance of recycling and hope to see a continued increase in our recovery rates."

Recycling Day reached its peak when volunteers and community members were entertained and inspired to recycle by renowned kwaito king, Arthur Mafokate and the queen of dance, Chomee.
