Plett plan for small boat harbour sinks

Opponents of a R4bn plan for a small boat harbour in Plettenberg Bay - intended to incorporate 482 homes, a hotel and 2000 parking bays - are celebrating after the developer's scoping report was rejected.

The Save Plett Alliance said Monday, 3 November the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning had turned down the developer's plea for more time to submit a revised report.

The development by Western Cape Marina Investments would have changed the Piesang River estuary and Central Beach.

The scoping report was rejected in April and the developer was given six months to table an amended report. It failed to do so, and its request for a two-year extension was rejected.

The department's land management head for the region, Kobus Munro, said if the developer wanted to proceed it would have to submit a new application.

The proposal met massive opposition from ratepayers and visitors who said its scope was out of kilter with the size of the town and would have a catastrophic impact on the environment.

"The Save Plett Alliance believes that this is the best possible outcome we could have hoped for," said spokesman Basil van Rooyen.

Developer Peter Ahern did not respond to questions about his future plans.
