Tractor sales up 5.7% to 353 units y/y

Tractor sales for the whole of 2013 fell 5% from 2012 to 7‚516 units.

December 2013's combine harvester sales of seven units marked a fall of four units from the 11 units sold in December 2012‚ but sales for the year were almost 3% higher than in 2012.

"Rainfall has been very patchy this season‚ with some areas‚ mainly in the east‚ having had good rains.

"In the west‚ however‚ rains were late and this will have affected maize plantings‚" the association said‚ adding that the recent weakness of the rand was causing some concern in the market.

"Commodity prices‚ however‚ should remain good in the face of the weaker rand and the relatively low grain stocks in the country‚" it said.

Early predictions of sales for the 2014 calendar year indicate that tractor sales are likely to be flat or up to 10% lower compared with 2013 sales.
