Paddle Pop and Tygerberg Children's Hospital all scream for ice cream

Because ice cream makes everything better, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation distributed Paddle Pop ice creams, as part of the brand's "week of joy" campaign, to the kids and their visitors at the Tygerberg Children's Hospital yesterday.

This week, Paddle Pop delivered 53,800 ice creams to hospitals, orphanages and charities in and around Cape Town.

Unilever approached the Foundation to donate some of these ice creams to the Tygerberg Children's Hospital because Paddle Pop is well aligned with a recent project the Foundation worked on at the Tygerberg Children's Hospital.

Reverend Mpho Tutu said, "The Foundation recently revamped the children's playroom on floor G9 of the Tygerberg Children's Hospital. Play is fun for children. Play is learning for children. We've always believed in the importance of learning through play."

"Children learn about themselves, their environment, people and the world around them through play. It enhances creativity and develops leadership and healthy personalities. With Paddle Pop's central theme - let kids be kids through adventurous play - we really felt this donation was fitting," said Tutu. In addition to the handing out of ice creams, the Foundation also handed over 400 teddy bears and 400 Christmas boxes to the children's ward.

Paddle Pop brand manager Pippa van Breda said, "We love that the Paddle Pop brand shares the same spirit with the Foundation around children learning through play and are glad we can be a part of adding a little extra joy to the children." As the school at Tygerberg Hospital opens next year, Paddle Pop will surprise the children with a few more fun and playful activities.

Other beneficiaries of the campaign include: The Macedonia Project; The Homestead Project; the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospita; the new Somerset Hospital; Heaven's Nest; The Joining Hands Project; and The Rabboni Outreach.
