Vodacom golf tournaments assist children's charities

This year's Vodacom Business Origins of Golf series honoured Ernie "The Big Easy" Els but the central player in the 2010 tournament was the Birdies for Kiddies campaign, to which some of South Africa's top celebrity and business players participated and contributed to by hitting birdies.

For every birdie made by a player during the tournament, the Vodacom Foundation donated R500 to a selection of children's charities. As Schalk Burger, Ard Matthews, Bryan Habana, Vanessa Haywood, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Corne Krige and Breyten Paulse all took to the green, the competition was high as attempts were made to hit birdies in support and appreciation for the cause at hand.

For the final, being held at Ernie Els designed Oubaai Golf Course in George from 13-15 October 2010, this figure has been increased to R2000 per birdie.

Helping many

"The annual participation of key business influencers in the series is a true indication of the tournament's overall success and signalling how participants can gain from this valuable networking opportunity," comments Steven Haywood, executive director: Vodacom Business South Africa.

Birdies for Kiddies, a charity initiative launched by the Vodacom Foundation in 2009, has raised R1 174 900 this year. It aids organisations such as:

  • Ndlovu Nutritional Unit - a pre-school feeding programme and a campaign to teach communities of the Groblersdal area (Limpopo Province) how to grow their own food;
  • ACFS Feeding Scheme - a project that feeds 20 000 children per day in a variety of townships;
  • New Beginningz - an organisation which cares for abandoned, abused and neglected babies and toddlers;
  • Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA).
