According to The Food and Agriculture Organisation of The United Nations, Africa remains the continent with the highest percentage of undernourishment, affecting almost 21% of the population. This stark fact, is one of the reasons retailer TFG has committed to packing 155,000 meals for distribution to children across Africa in honour of World Hunger Month this October.
“No child should go hungry. While we work throughout the year providing meals to as many children in South Africa as we can, our efforts are really ramped up during World Hunger Month. The Hands Against Hunger campaign is not just an initiative, it’s a strategic pillar with clear targets we’re committed to achieving. Ultimately, we understand that in order to Educate to Empower our future leaders, we need to meet their basic needs first,” says Mymoena Mooradd, CSI Manager at TFG.
TFG has already donated over 500,000 meals over the past three years, benefitting many Early Childhood Development Centres across the country.
Amien Isaacs, Marketing and Events Coordinator for the Western Cape branch of Rise Against Hunger, says, “The fight against hunger is not an initiative or project, it is a long-term, invested approach and TFG has remained committed to the fight.”
Each October, World Hunger Month and World Food Day on the 16th are aimed at encouraging action to tackle the global hunger challenge, and there are many ways to get involved.
