Union calls for heads to roll

Union calls for CEOs of Premier Foods, Pioneer Foods and Foodcorp to go over the bread-price fixing scandal.

The Food and Allied Workers' Union (Fawu) on Thursday called for the resignation of the chief executive officers of Premier Foods, Pioneer Foods and Foodcorp over the bread-price fixing scandal.

Union's spokeswoman Dominique Swartz said: "And if the big milk processors and the retailers were to be found guilty of price-fixing, Fawu also demands the resignation of their chief executives."

Swartz said the union was taking legal advice with the Congress of SA Trade Unions on making an application to facilitate solutions on the price-fixing scandals.

The union was planning a two-day industrial action to support government intervention, and the nationalisation of maize meal, bread and milk products.

It had not yet decided on a date.

Swartz said: "We are not surprised by the scandalous and morally repugnant price fixing in the milk industry and dairy sector."

"We welcome the decision by the competition commission to investigate the milk value chain in addition to the current investigations in the bread value-chain," she said.

Swartz called on competition authorities to investigate the maize meal value-chain as it believed anti-competitive practices were taking place.
