The first ‘made for the Net' music video by a South African Web site was shot in Cape Town thanks to collaboration between Channel24.co.za, Die Burger and fans of the Afrikaans music icon, Koos Kombuis.
The song, “Reconciliation Day”, mourns the violent death of his friend and musical collaborator Taliep Petersen, and expresses his fears that the new South African dream will not become reality.
The first version of this song was recorded by Channel24.co.za for Koos, in his lounge, and was one of the top 10 free MP3 downloads for 2007 with more than 66 000 downloads during the year. Koos later recorded a studio version of the song for his new album, Bloedrivier, and emailed Channel24.co.za to challenge them to make a music video for him.
Upon hearing about the idea late last week through Koos' blog on Channel24.co.za, dozens of fans volunteered as extras for the video shoot. Students from Arthur Murray Dance Studios volunteered as extras and Anton Marshall, Gerrit Aalbers and Anthony Theunissen provided music back-up. Shot at Jan Van Riebeeck High School with lighting provided by Anton White from Kinetic and make-up, hair, wardrobe and set dressing provided by Cathi Trevor.
The video will first be broadcast on channel24.co.za, followed by television.
