Mpact Plastics Atlantis cuts the grade

Food packaging manufacturers faced with implementing a perplexing set of food safety standards, often find themselves having to comply with multiple standards in order to supply the big retailers, each with their own unique requirements.

FSSC 22000 is an encompassing standard that is recognised by all stakeholders in the food industry and is also applicable to the food packaging industry. South Africa is fast joining the international trend towards adopting this standard and Mpact Plastics, one of South Africa’s leading packaging manufacturer’s is an early adopter of this certification, with the assistance of SAI Global.

Paul Visagie, GM of FMCG Operations at Mpact Plastics, says that prior to FSSC 22000, the company needed multiple certifications in order to service its diverse customer base, which resulted in a fair amount of duplication. “It’s prudent and it’s a necessary part of good corporate governance at Mpact. FSSC 22000 is a specific requirement for packaging that is directly related to the food industry, thus addressing risk in the food packaging industry.”

Our Mpact Plastics Atlantis plant is now also FSSC 22000 certified and the food safety audit was conducted by SAI Global and certified FSSC 22000.

Jacques Williams, Certification Manager, Assurance Services for SAI Global’s Southern African office, says: “FSSC 22000 is specifically targeted at food and packaging manufacturers. This certification scheme will help secure food safety standards within the production process of the supply chain. SAI Global is a worldwide leader in Food Safety audits, certification and training. Our auditors understand that the application of the standard can be quite different for various sized organisations, and are trained to assess client systems in an appropriate way.”

The FSSC (Foundation for Food Safety Certification) is an independent, non-profit organisation based in the Netherlands. FSSC states that the standard, based on ISO 22000, brings it in line with the additional requirements of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).

The FSSC 22000 standard is recognised by major market and retail participants and their members worldwide: among them GFSI, the European Organisation for Food and Drink Manufacturers, and GMA (Grocery Manufacturers’ Association in the USA).
