Ogilvy's Carree Ferrari won the prized Roger Garlick award at the AdReview Awards on the 24th April for her creative conception and execution of the Cliff Jennings stunt, for M-Net's Idols 4.
Directed by Benjamin Magowan, Cliff Jennings entered Idols in every audition city, serving himself up for a slew of some witty and some not-so-witty retorts by the judges. The believability and endurance of the character was pivotal to his reception by both the reality TV show's organisers as well as the other contestants alike.
Benjamin had to cast a guy that wouldn't have a care in the world and looked like a complete failure. That was actor Eduan van Jaarsveldt. They set off to make the documentary of his Idols journey.
“Eduan is an amazing performer and never once let it slip whether on camera, or off. Even when the cat was out of the bag, he still played the character of Cliff,” says Benjamin. “Directing him was an amazing experience. We really wanted to build a three-dimensional character that had a good side, a dark side, but who was ultimately naïve and good spirited; the quintessential underdog that never gave up on his dream of launching his singer/songwriting career.” As ‘Benji the Cameraman', Benjamin was never once asked by the organisers, the public, or the media as to why he was making a documentary about an individual who evidently had no musical talent whatsoever.
